If you dont like it here please do get out more and travel around town before you form a opinion. Also I was raised in the what you all call the poor side the projects and it has changed but not as bad as youll say and I am a very productive citizen.

Take care
We were strongly thinking about moving to Springfield last Spring.
We drove down and checked the area out. It's a really nice area, the only thing I didn't like were the steep hills, that could be a problem in the winter if they were iced up.
The downtown was great. We parked and walked all over it. The people were especially nice.
I'm not sure, but it's been awhile, kj37172 are you a firefighter?
If so, my family met you, your son and wife. My daughter got to climb up into your fire truck, and played a little bit with your son in church, and around the fire station.

We were all set to move. The house was on the market, the job transfer was in the works, and then, the market crashed in our area.
We ended up almost heading towards the Northwest back to Idaho, but decided to wait out the market.

We are still moving to the area, and my daughter still talks about the fun she had while we were there.

I know I've been gone from this forum for awhile... life happens.
My nick before was TNBound. It's now MomsTn.

My hubby will be able to retire next year, if he wants to, but he probably won't since our youngest daughter is only 8.
We're just waiting on the housing to come up a little, and then we'll be able to sell our house (not give it away!)

We have a plan. This fall our daughter will be in an Arts Magnet School, and we promised her that she can go at least a year.
I know there is a really good magnet school in Hendersonville.
There's also a really good one closer to Nashville.

We are planning on coming back down, either this summer, or next spring.

Default Can somebody tell us the truth about the "IMMIGRATION DEBATE"?

Hello All!

My husband and I are considering a move to Springfield because he has a good job offer there. We are a young couple, both highly educated, church-going (Catholic), and very community-oriented. Springfield sounded like a great option, because we are ready to start a family and we would like a different (more relaxed) environment than south Florida. I am originally from MS, and I miss the southern charm more than anything. Perhaps we can find some of that in TN? Long story short, I recently got a shock when I heard the City Manager's ( Alderman's?) remarks about Hispanics. There's been a lot of bad press recently, huh? My husband is a successful, well-respected Hispanic professional. Indeed, we lived in MS in some of the least diversified areas, and he never had any trouble.

I know there are two sides to every story, but am I right to fear that your town is against immigrants and diversity? I've researched it a bit, and it seems that many of the residents of Springfield have the same attitude as the Aldermen/City Manager in regards to Spanish-speaking/Hispanic individuals. Though I am not Hispanic, my children will be, at least in part, and I intend to teach them to speak fluent Spanish as I do and be proud of their heritage.

Advice? What do some of the people who live in Springfield have to say about the town's attitudes toward bilingualism? Diversity? Tolerance? Is this a good move for us? I am very open to learning from people who actually know--I'd love to be wrong about the situation in Springfield. I'm grateful for any words of wisdom you guys can offer.

Thanks a million!

I can't tell you what it's like all the time, but I can tell you of an incident when we visited Springfield.
My husband is a postal worker, and he had put in for a transfer to the Springfield office.
We both went inside and stood in line, patiently waiting to talk to the Postmaster.
There was a hispanic man in front of us in the line. He was probably in his mid 30's.
When it was his turn the window clerk (female), raised her voice like he was deaf or something. She said, "Do you speak English?" He said, "Yes."
She then tells him, step aside, I'll have to have someone deal with you. She then yelled for some guy in the back to come and wait on him.
I've never seen anyone treat another human being more rudely in my life.
Her whole demeanor changed.
We were next, and after that we weren't really sure what she was going to do.
She turned to us, and the Wicked witch of the North left, and she was all nice a sweet to us.
That is until the Postmaster came. She was ease dropping.
The minute transfer was mentioned she said, "Now, you promised that my daughter would get the next transfer into this office."
My husband realized that he didn't want to be in that office working alongside that woman.

It was obvious that she didn't want to deal with hispanic people, and that she would have made my husbands life a living you know what if he transferred in. He had more seniority than this womans daughter, and he was the person slotted in for the job, but we turned it back in.

Other than that one incident, we found the people of Springfield to be very nice, and helpful.

We met one of the guys from this board, who lives there and had a nice time talking to him.

The town has just about everything you would need.
If you want a Mall, there are several within a 30-40 mile radius.
Nashville is close enough, but far enough away to not be bothered by the traffic.
The scenery is beautiful, but a little too hilly for us.
That was the only drawback.
We were looking for a more flat area with mountains in the background.

We did find a place that we think we would like that we'll be visiting this summer.

Try to come and visit the city first. Get a feel for it.
Go sit in a local mom/pop restaurant. That's where you will find the "heart" of the city. The locals that come and visit, drink coffee, and hear all the local news.

Our particular incident could be due to the fact that this window clerk doesn't like anyone, and is difficult to work with.
Who knows, she could have been having a bad day.

Don't let some disgruntled city official scare you off.
That guy is just a jerk.
When his term is up, he probably won't be voted back in.
I talked to a lot of people about him, and there wasn't a lot of love for the man.

Come and visit the town, and good luck in your adventure in moving.

MomsTn- Just wanted to chime in and say "hi" to a fellow USPS family

We are currently in the process of moving from El Paso, TX to the Springfield area. I was raised in Springfield till I was 13 and have been in El Paso ever since. It's time to come back home
We are actually trying to transfer to the Nashville area with the USPS since it's a bigger area and we will have a better chance. My sister just moved back to Springfield with her family and I will be moving there with our 3 daughters in June. My husband will stay here with family until the transfer comes through. Originally we were hoping to live in the Hendersonville area but since I may have to start the girls in Springfield schools it looks like we will be looking around that area to settle in with my husband commuting.

Since we have family and friends still in Springfield we were always visiting Springfield throughout the years. I can't believe how much it has grown!! I've heard it's gotten "rougher" but I still consider it "home" and haven't lived there in 25 years LOL

On the hispanic issue- I really hope that isn't the case citywide- my friends and family certainly don't think negative about it. Coming from El Paso I'm actually glad there is a hispanic population there...that way the girls won't have too big of a cultural shock

Christine~

Default Springfield Post Office

I've applied for the Postmaster vacancy at the Springfield Post Office. It was interesting to hear about the "witch" at the PO. If I get the job, I'll do my best to have more courteous window clerks. Any other advice for me, anything that will help me on my interview?

If you are looking between Springfield and I-24, make sure they have resolved the regional landfill issue.

I looked at houses in Springfield 3 years ago and even made an offer on one, then I had to delay my move. 6 months ago we were able to go ahead with the move and again, looked in Springfield. I thought the town had gone downhill in the last few years. It's hard to explain but it just looked more run down than it did. Maybe because so many businesses are closing. My gut said, stay away. We decided on Nashville instead.

One could say that about...well...much of the South. Bigotry is in a strange phase here. Most of my coworkers are openly racist, but they won't actually treat non-whites badly. They simply say horrible things about them when they're not around. Also, they make exceptions. We have several specific Hispanic and African-American customers and they are well-liked and treated very well. But then my coworkers will turn around and say the worst things you could imagine about those races in general. I can't figure that out. I work with two guys from Springfield, one, as far as I know, has never said an unkind word of any group of people, and the other can't hardly complete a sentence without using a racial slur, and is proud of it. So obviously it's a mixed bag. Many others on this board may have never experienced this, and I hadn't either while I still worked in Nashville. When I started working in my home town (Murfreesboro) I was shocked at the things I heard on a daily basis. Up until then I wouldn't have believed that the South was as racist as some say. Of course, there are also many, many folks here who aren't like that at all, thankfully.
