Taking 840 is 18 miles further than staying on I-40 and is a better choice at rush hour...

I like 840 too. It's a super easy drive, I never see traffic on it. I would much rather be moving than in bumper to bumper traffic. But if you go 840, know that there are very few exits with businesses. So make any stops before you get on 840.

Even if it isn't rush hour...one accident could be a parking lot....

I vote for taking 840. Worst case scenario is that there was no traffic at all downtown and you wasted 15 minutes of your life and $1 of gas by driving an extra 18 miles.

Best case is much, much better than the above scenario and involves you retaining your sanity on a Friday afternoon.

840 if you simply don't want to risk the traffic at all. As others have said, just make sure you're gassed up and don't need to stop for food or restrooms. It's not the wilderness, but there just aren't many stops out there. Briley is an okay option but there are sections that get quite congested. Personally,

I'd take 40 through at 3-4:00, but there is a risk it'll be heavy traffic through there. If you're coming through closer to 5:00, I'd take 840.

The Hermitage is a great spot to visit especially if you've got more than a passing interest in history. It's one of the state's premier historical sites.

Download Waze and do what it says. It uses actual data, and if you come between 3-4PM there's a good chance you actually won't get bogged down through downtown. School is now out of session and traffic is noticeably better now than it was just two weeks ago.

I can't imagine 840 is going to be faster than Briley. 840 is a LONG way out of the way. Briley is out of the way but nowhere near as far out of the way as 840. Briley will allow you to miss 90% of the traffic but will probably be 5-10 miles further than just taking 40 all the way through.

Something we can agree on in the 3pm-6pm is to not think of using I-440 from West Nashville over to 24 & back to 40. Most days it seems like it is clogged for the entire route.
