Old Hickory
I'm looking for information on this area, particularly the older historic homes. Is this a nice safe area?

I don't live in that area, or even get out that way very often, so I can't help you very much. But, since no one else has responded . . .
I did see a news segment on TV a few months ago about Old Hickory. Several years ago the area was slowly decllining, but that in the past ten years or so it's actually become a fairly desirable area again and the price of houses in the area was raising (this was before the recently slow-down in home sales). The people interviewed seemed to be really happy with their little area near the lake. They showed some rather nice homes on the segment. Again, I'm just repeating what I've heard or seen, I don't have any first-hand experience.

Thinking of moving from south Florida (West Palm Beach) area to either around Nashville area or the area surrounding Chattanooga. Some of the areas that I have checked out are Murfreesboro,Hendersonville, Mt. Juliet and Franklin. Other areas are Hixson, Ooltewah,East Brainerd. Chrildren are grown and I'm a single senior citizen. Any suggestions on any of these areas?

Tell us a little more about yourself and what you're looking for.
You might want to consider starting your own thread in the main Tennessee forum with an appropriate title so that others will understand what information you're looking for (such as "Looking for information on towns around Nashville and Chattanooga"). More people would see it that way and respond.

Thanks so much, alleycat. I found a few cool homes in that area and wanted to see who could give me the scoop. It is a desirable area it would be much more convenient for us than Hendersonville, which is also on our list.
Anybody else?

Are you familiar with the history of the Old Hickory area?

I just did a google search on the area. Wasn't this a planned community for Dupont workers?

We spent about an hour driving around Old Hickory Village last April. It's certainly quaint and attractive. People were very friendly and the lake is lovely to look at. We talked to random people on the street who raved about the area and were extremely welcoming and kind. But we coulnd't find a "downtown" (I think there was a fire at some point?) and there didn't seem to be much to do. Also, we felt it was a little far from downtown Nashville and a little hard to get to. Still, it was very peaceful and quiet. Loved the architecture. Looks kind of like a New England fishing town.

Thanks, whithill. I appreciate your insight. With this being a former company town is the Dupont plant visible from the "heart" of Old Hickory Village? What impact does the plant have on this community, if any? This area, being on the water and having a historic feel to it, almost seems too good to be true yet real estate prices are so low. We are just trying to figure out why.
