In a couple weeks, I will be driving up to Indiana. Sunday night, I will be staying in Decatur, AL. I will leave Decatur and drive north on 65. How long does it take to drive from Decatur to Nashville? Could I cut over onto 840, south west of Nashville and head north to 48 to Interstate 24? I would love to bypass as much traffic as possible.

Huntsville to Nashville should be about 2:20.

On a Sunday the only item to check would be if there was a Titans home game at the stadium. Most Titan traffic should be on the I-24 side of the downtown loop. The second thing to check is if there is any construction causing delays in Ky. There isn't much of a bypass for that.

If you are going to western Indiana in the future you could take I-24 northwest & get on the penny parkway & I-69 to take you to Evansville. There is a direct connection bypassing Hopkinsville. They should be working on a segment to connect to Indy. Today not sure how far north of Evansville I-69 is open.

I agree with the Pennyrile. Parkway route.

It's the easiest drive to Evansville.

There's not a bypass around Nashville that will save any time if you are going from one side to the other. Even in afternoon's heaviest traffic I can't imagine that it will be quicker to take 840 than 65. Maybe less stressful, but not quicker. I would recommend going through Nashville between 9am and 2pm to miss traffic.

My advice for traffic planning it to get Waze and use it. It uses real time crowd-sourced traffic conditions to plot the fastest course.

I will be driving in the area on a Monday. The Penny Parkway is 69? As near as I can, north of Evansville, I am going to go on 231 north to my destination in northern Indiana. Thanks for your comments.

The Pennyrile Pkwy starts near Hopkinsville, Kentucky. It is Route 41, which you can take all the way up to Northern Indiana.

The junction of I-24 with the Pennyrile is a few miles past the exit with Route 41. It may not be on all the maps yet. You do bypass Hopkinsville. There is a nice KY rest area & travel center just over the state line if you need a map or a stop. The Parkway is a free 4 lane divided highway until you get to Hendersonville. About 1/2 way up you pick up I-69 on the Western Ky Parkway from the West & up to Evansville. You still use the 4 lane US 41 bridge over the Ohio. Then I-69 begins again & connects all the way to I-64. Last time I was on the route there was some construction mostly to extend some entrance/exit lanes. Some day there will have to be a new Ohio river bridge & some new roadway.
