Single, Black Mother Considering a Move to Brentwood, TN
I am a single, black mother who is considering a move to Brentwood, TN. I currently live in Ohio, which was a decision I hastily made after my husband was killed while serving just to be near my sister. I grew up in Memphis, but refuse to raise my three children there. However, I'm now ready to move to a place where I've given it more thought and that isn't as cold as the Midwest, that's still close to family, where the public schools are EXCELLENT, that's accepting of a black family, etc. My main concern is acceptance of blacks in Brentwood. I know that it is predominantly white and have great schools, but I just want to raise my kids in a safe environment in which they will be accepted in the neighborhood and school. This is my main concern. I apologize for babbling in this post, but I'm really searching for the best place for my children. I'm not overly concerned about my wants compared to my kids. In addition, are there any good multi-cultural, non-denominational churches nearby. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

May I politely ask a question first, before getting into the subject of whether Brentwood would be the good fit for you.
When you said your husband was killed, did you mean while serving in the military?

I thought that's what you meant. Then I'm very sorry for your loss and our country's loss before anything else.

I am black as well and have a family home in Nashville area. Brentwood is beautiful but I didn't find the people that welcoming or friendly there. On the flip side of it I think the school are a good in that area (maybe someone else can shed more light). Personally though, if I end up staying in Nashville I plan to move from the present home we have to Germantown, I loves that place.

Williamson County has the best schools in the state, I think.
I don't know a lot about Brentwood/the people that live there.

A good deal of the people who live in Brentwood are from somewhere else. Nissan transplants from California, Ohio, Michigan, Chicago, NJ, Canada, PA, and England. I don't believe you will have a problem. Williamson County has great schools. If you want Williamson County schools make sure when you are taken into Brentwood, that its in Williamson County, because parts of Brentwood are in Davidson County. The line is very thin there.

vautorslo, so sorry to hear about your loss. I believe the majority of people in Brentwood would welcome you. People in Brentwood are very diverse as far as their geographical origin. The education level in Brentwood is one of the highest in the state and I think you will find quite a few socially progressive people who will be more interested in the content of your character than the color of your skin. Your child will have a wonderful opportunity to prosper in a very good school system. Good luck & God bless.

My condolences to you and you families. My family & I moved to Brentwood from CA about 1.5 yrs ago. I was very concerned about diversity but have been pleasantly surprised. In my upper middle class neighborhood there are at least 4 black families within 2-3 houses from mine. There is a nondenominational church called Bethel World Outreach on Granny White Pike & Old Hickory Blvd that is about 40% black, 40% white and 20% other (my approximation) and has great music.
