Brentwood has lots of more upscale cookie-cutter developments. The closer you go towards Antioch, a.k.a. "Brentioch" the worse things become.

I moved from Manhattan to Nashville two years ago and hated it at first. I live and work in the Vandy area and just recently realized what a walkable neighborhood it is. I still have my car, but I only drive it to Green Hills and Cool Springs now when I have to visit stores that aren't located in Hillsboro Village/West End (Kroegers, Whole Foods, and Macys for the most part). A 2 BR for $800 could be possible near Vandy, I seem to recall that some of the apartments on Fairfax and Acklen were around this price when I was searching 2 years ago. Check out craigslist for possibilities. The sidewalks extend very far around here, so don't be afraid to look at further out apartments that might be a 15 - 20 minute walk to Vandy if you're up for a true walkable experience. The only walkable supermarkets in this neighborhood are Harris Teeters (nice & clean inside) and Apple Market (a little more gritty inside) so keep that in mind when looking. Good luck!

East Nashville has Shelby Park and lots of mature trees through the neiborhoods. It has a small town feel to it even though it's right over the river from downtown. Very easy access to music row and many people in the industry live there.
