Pasteurization has helped rid the world or reduced the number of cases of many diseases, such as, tuberculosis, polio, scarlet fever, and typhoid fever.
It should be illegal to consume raw milk to prevent idiots and other country hicks from contracting and spreading disease. I understand that in theory raw milk is safe, but there is no guarantee that the cow was not exposed to any viruses or pathogens. Pasteurization is the best preventative measure we have today.

West Wind Farms Organic and Grassfed Beef, Lamb, Pork & Poultry
These people were at the East Nashville Farmers Market today and offer part ownership for dairy
cows. They are based out of Morgan Co., Tennessee. Tried their Summer Sausage, incredible...

Do you WORK for the FDA? Wow.
Milk is not harmful in its natural state - its the poor care and treatment of the cows (ie - the typical medical reactionary treatment of disease) that causes the milk to be unhealthy. This is like saying water is a healthfood only when it has flouride added. Please.
Oh, and "It should be illegal to consume raw milk to prevent idiots and other country hicks from contracting and spreading disease. I understand that in theory raw milk is safe, but there is no guarantee that the cow was not exposed to any viruses or pathogens. Pasteurization is the best preventative measure we have today."
Idiots and other country hicks - - - wow, dont hold back there buddy. I have been drinking raw milk for years, as well as my children went directly from breast to raw goats milk and never get the typical childhood illnesses that go around. I am highly offended that you are so close-minded to assume that anyone drinking raw milk would be an idiot or a country hick. Do some better research, stop being a sheep, then maybe you can have an actual conversation with someone who believes something differently than you without causing an uproar. Some people thrive on being the center of attention, and I can only assume that you felt like sharing your hurtful words only to cause an uproar.

We are moving back to TN (I grew up in Goodlettsville) this summer and where we are now I can purchase raw (unpasturized/non-homogenized) milk in the local health food stores. I know its not "legal" to sell there... that it may be sold under a "cow share" program or what ever...or perhaps sold as "pet food" or something. Anyone here have info?

My Uncle and his Son are third generation dairy farmers in Middle TN. They will not sell raw milk for the same reason many others won't: You can in fact get sick from drinking milk from a sick cow. Plain and simple. While modern dairy cows are often kept in cleaner environments and receive instant medical treatment, the fact is that if you drink raw milk, then you're more likely to get food poisoning or some other ailment as a result.
When we talk about Pasteurization, we're simply talking about heating milk or other liquids to a point that kills off 99.9% of the microbial content of the said liquid. Put it in another way, would you go into a dental office and be comfortable with a dentist using picks that had been merely hand-washed versus sterilized? I mean- sure, you're probably going to be fine... right?

They will not sell raw milk because its ILLEGAL for human consumption in TN. They are not selling pasteurized milk for any other reason I can almost bet you. When people are paying upwards of $10 per gallon for RAW milk in droves because they (we, I) know the benefits of milk in its raw form, then from a business sense, your Uncle and Son would most gladly sell to walk-in's or Co-Ops if it were legal I can assure you.
Now, it is true as well you can get sick from pasteurized milk not just raw. Pasteurization doesnt make milk invincible, it just temporarily kills what "MIGHT" have been in there that could have made you sick, whether or not it was there is only known by testing so to be safe the dairies just kill it all (the good AND the bad). Milk doesnt deserve any exclusivity on food poisoning either... look at the news with the tomatoes, or jalapenos, or meat, or restaraunts whose items on salad bars poison dozens of people at a time. Risk is everywhere - yet the propoganda on raw milk of yesteryear lives on; we accept regular bouts of salmonella and food poisioning from poor preparation in restaurants and other distributors of food products but look out for that Raw milk! Oh No! <sarcasm>.
Anyway, many people understand the risks and also understand the benefits, so any smart and educated person who wants raw milk is going to know their source and therefore it isnt a problem. No one is going to dispute that buying raw milk from a stranger or someone's farm you dont know is not the smartest idea.

Oh and I forgot to mention... you can find Raw Milk sources in Nashville here:
Where Can I Find Real (Raw) Milk?
I have been using the coop that delivers to Green Hills every other Saturday for over a year now.. Excellent milk and top quality. Its milked the same morning of delivery. Our group orders close to 200 gallons regularly.

This is hilarious. "Smart and intelligent people" only drink Raw milk. To put this into perspective, come dinner time, would you call the kiddies in around the dinner table and slap a nice, raw, bloody, uncooked steak on their plates? Or- how about a nice raw, uncooked chicken breast? Better yet- unwashed vegetables, pulled right out of the ground- dirt and all? When you drink raw milk, that's precisely what you're doing. Sure- there's actually a small chance that you will get sick from eating raw steak or chicken. But the chance of getting sick with cooking it is signifigantly less. Its your choice, and one made easy for you, which is to weigh the risks involved with consuming raw animal byproducts that might or might not contain live bacteria, some of which is potentially deadly, which have been scientifically proven to be eradicated with heat for hundreds of years. That's really what it "boils" down to.( no pun intended)
