Hi guys, I'm sure you're sick of this by now. But I was wondering if anyone who is familiar with the Vandy area of Nashville could point me to some places that would be ideal for a grad student who is unfamiliar to the area to live? I have a roommate, so I'm looking for a good 2 BR apartment that doesn't exceed the $1500 level. How is Westboro? How close is that really to the campus? Any other ideas? I'm completely lost, and any and all suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

The Westboro is close to Vandy. According to where you're going on campus it could be a relatively short walk, or a long one to Vandy from there. Part of the Vandy campus almost touches the Westboro, but most of the classroom buildings are further east of there. I don't know what the Westboro is like inside; I would guess the apartments are a little old-fashioned but acceptable to a grad student.
If you stay within a half-mile or so of Vandy you should be alright; most of the area is nice enough and safe (but don't look too near to Charlotte Pike). A budget of $1500 would give you several choices I think (I don't keep up with apartment rents however). If you find anything else online, just post it here and one of us can probably tell you if the area is acceptable or not. We may or may not know anything about the particular apartments. I go by the Vandy area almost daily; if needed, I can swing by and maybe give you an idea of what a particular place seems like on the outside. |

There aren't many (if any) sprawling apartment complexes in the Vandy area but there are a couple of smaller ones (like the Westboro) and a pretty good number of individually-owned condos and duplexes/houses for rent too. Between newspaper classifieds and craigslist you should be able to find something pretty easily. If you're already in town or visiting I'd also suggest checking out bulletin boards at local coffee shops in the area as many landlords post ads there.

so my roomie and I decided to go ahead and reserve the last unit left at the Gardens of Hillsboro Village - this was almost done out of desperation because they are so pricey! How close is it exactly to the campus? I'm starting grad school there, so I'll probably be somewhere close to the med school. Does anyone know if they're really worth it? I hope so. And are there any other places that are nearby that might be better?

I think for 1500 dollars a month you could find a house in the Sylvan Park community. That would require you to drive around and look for places for rent however. My fiance is in that area (also a grad student at vandy) and he is able to ride his bike. There are also some other apartments right near 40 and West End called The Grove at Whitworth and there is another Grove also that is in teh same location that I cant remember the name of. I am pretty certain the gardens of hillsboro village are close enough to walk also and you should be fine getting to the medical center from there if that is waht you are worried about.
