Does anyone know of a good place buy plants, espcially houseplants at a reasonable price? I live on the edge of Bellevue and the closest Wal Mart and Lowes have very poor selections.

I don't know much about Bellevue, but I always find the biggest selection and best quality plants at my local nursery in Mt. Juliet (Needham's). Seems like the small places have fresher plants and generally are more knowledgeable than Lowe's/Home Depot/etc.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but thought maybe I could ask this here since it's about trees/plants?

What can you guys tell me about cherry trees in middle TN? I am interested in getting one at some point. Also, I would like to get a Japanese Maple as well.

Mike - This was about 8 years back, but I found a Japanese Maple at Walmart. I happen to think Walmart as great trees and shrubs.

Sorry, I didn't mean where to get them. I was more referring to their growth rate, if there is enough sunlight here, how often to they produce fruit, etc.

No Mike, I read your question wrong. My Japanese maple grew very slowly and I think most of them do.

I have a cherry tree in my yard. It was here when I bought the place in '93 and it has produced and abundance of cherries every year except one. My husband pruned it at the wrong time (in the spring, can you believe that). Anyway there are little trees sprouting up all around it. We keep them all cut down except one that is a perfect distance from the parent tree. It's about 5ft. tall now and has bloomed two years but hasn't had any fruit yet. I guess its still to young. It has grown around a ft. or more per year and is in the shade in the mornings and sun in the afternoon. So far I haven't had any problems with birds eating them all before I get what I want. They sure make good pies and cobblers in the winter time.

Cherries seem to do pretty well here. Japanese Maples can be hit and miss sometimes. I know last year most were nearly killed by a very late and severe frost (which is not normal). I think it took them a full year to come back, but most have. That's really the only major deterrant for them that I know of.

I'd go to your local nursery and ask them what they think...they're the experts.
