Also, are there any area's in Murfreesboro I should not consider for raising kids?

It depends on what part of Nashville you will be commuting to. Murfreesboro to downtown will take you about 40-60 mins a typical morning on I-24. The traffic is moderate, worse on some days then others. Some days its stop and go, other days you can drive 70 mph. They recently installed those electronic signs on the freeway that alert you of any major accidents or delays if you're heading downtown. On rainy days the traffic is really slow, if there's a major accident you might as well turn around and go home.
Schools are decent in Murfreesboro, and from what I know there aren't any really bad areas to watch out for there.

We just moved to Murfreesboro and it's been great. The main road, hwy 96 is very congested but we are learning side and alternates to take and save time. But we don't work outside the home, luckily so we don't have to deal with the traffic at popular times, not much of an issue. There are a ton of places here that are very affordable and NOT on the main road so the traffic is laughable compared to most everywhere else.
In my opinion I would not recommend living near the college area unless that is your interest. There seems to be a lot of low income housing in that area and not really the best. There are a lot of apartments here because of the college.
You could find some nice housing near Blackman/S. Church Street/South side and west side of town...or the north side of town is nice but not as much shopping. We were looking for 3/4 br brick houses for about $200-220 and ended up about $245 but we are really happy with what we have. If you don't mind a small yard and seeing your neighbors eating dinner you can get around the $200-210 range.
Let me know if you need help, I would be glad to tell you a few places to look.

It hate to give you a halfway answer, but it really depends on where you live in M'boro, and where you work in Franklin/Nashville. If you live close to I-24 or TN-840 and work in Antioch, the drive could probably be really short - maybe something like 25 minutes. However, if you live 15 minutes from the interstate and work in Metrocenter, you may be looking at close to an hour. I live about a mile from MTSU in the area another poster recommended you stay away from. The drive from here to Cool Springs in Franklin where my wife worked w/Nissan was about 45 minutes.

You'll notice areas to stay away from just by passing through them. It's M'boro, not Compton, so most areas are safe. Personally, the only areas I would avoid are the Patterson Park, Kittrell, downtown, and Bradyville Pike areas, just that's me.
For any information of the public schools visit
MCS (some K-6 schools)
and
Rutherford County Schools (most of the Elementary and Secondary schools)

Let me put it this way. We thought the same thing (bang for buck) two years ago but are now looking for a home in Nashville. The commute sucks big fat donkey balls.
Bottom line, if you're going to work in Nashville, I'd suggest looking for something closer/not along I-24. Madison has decent home prices, though I admit I've never really been through much of the area.
I also worked in Franklin (cool springs) for about 1.5 yrs and it's not bad at all. Took me about 45 mins, but VERY little traffic...only a little once I got to Franklin. The drive is actually very pleasant, and 840 doesn't get busy EVER. I also saw many deer along the way. The commute to Franklin is about as good as a 45 min commute could be.
JMO.
P.S.
I have a nice home at 3450 Hardwood for sale ($140k) if you are interested in M'boro. It's 5 mins from 840 and I-24, and very convenient to both Smyrna and M'boro. Also, the school (Blackman) is supposed to be one of the top 10-20 in the country (though we don't have kids). We do like it there a lot, it's just the commute to Nashville that sucks.

To give you an actual example...
I left the Opry Mills mall Monday at 3:58. I arrived at my home near MTSU at 4:46. That's 48 minutes from NE Nashville to downtownish M'Boro. Although traffic would probably have been much worse had I left at 5.

I've never heard that Blackman stat, but the homes on Hardwood Dr. are very nice and in a great area. I've looked at some there before.

It was something I read from a number of people when we were looking to buy in that area. I did a little research back then and never was able to find info to prove either way, but did see where they were very highly rated nonetheless.
For anyone interested in a M'boro home, our MLS# is 890205. The house has only been on the market about two weeks.
