Window air conditioners are more expensive to run than central air. Most (but not all) homes here have central air.

Hubby will have to find a new job as his job does not offer relocation to TN so with the salary difference, we just want to know what he would have to make to be able to afford to live there.
Our electric bill here on LI was:
533 KWH (whatever that is) at $.0857 and 1989 KWH at $.0975 - giving a total of 2522 KWH for 64 days usage. Our bill was $517.47 total for the 64 days. We do have A/C's in the house (window kind) and we are 2 adults, 1 teen and a baby.
I appreciate your time and reply!

It is much more expensive to live in LI vs TN. I am orginally from LI, owned 2 homes there, then moved to NJ where the taxes were lower for a larger home. When I left there they were about equal to LI. $12,000 FOR A 2500 sq ft house.
An example is my 1st house in LI-Mt Sinai(2 hours from NYC) 1800SQ Ft ranch, present taxes $9000.
Here in Davidson County, 4500sq ft Contemporty, $3500 a yr taxes.
My electic here is about $200-$225 a month in summer, in NJ it was close to $450-$500 a month. Both are Central Air.
Also no state income tax taken out of the paycheck. Also none charged on funds in bank, only on stocks, investments.

I agree with Diane for the monthly estimate.
Your bill here in TN would have been about $225 instead of the $517 you paid on LI.
I live in a 2,400 sq ft home. When the heat & ac are off, the bill goes down to $75.
My home is ALL Electric.
LI2South, remember, I'm not paying for home heating oil or gas so the electric is the only bill I get each month. This is a big savings over LI.

The bill would be more like $112 because the initial post was for 2 months, not just one.

I already answered your post. But just for reference, my house is just about the same size as yours (1,050 sq.ft.). It's just my wife and I, but we use more than most two-person homes because I'm home during the day. Here are what are last few bills have been like:
Date Reading Days Usage Monthly Charge
7/31/08 25741 31 1286 $115.46
6/30/08 24455 32 968 $88.79
5/30/08 23487 29 679 $65.40
4/30/08 22808 30 913 $84.48
3/31/08 21895 31 1033 $135.86 (includes activation fee)
I'm in Murfreesboro, but I doubt the rates would be much different than where you are moving to.

Keep in mind that TVA just passed the 20% increase. They say it will impact the average user by around $15/month. For the larger homes with bills in the $200+/month range, it would be more like $40 or so per month.

We moved from Californai last year. Our health ins, car ins, food etc went thru the roof. We thought it would be cheaper here. The only thing cheaper is gas. We've been looking at houses and Nashville doesn't seem to know there is a housing crisis. We are in the process of moving back to California. It's more affordable there and safer drivers. Good luck

I have to say that I am also surprised at the post made by missy1999. I came from the New England area. My car insurance, real estate taxes and cost of food is less here. I'm wondering where in CA prices are lower in TN too.
