Is it manditory that songwriters have to invest in their songs to be demoed by those who want to pitch their songs to artists looking for material before they will pitch them. And. After the investment is made do all the songs demoed get pitched. Or is it just a way for publishers to earn income through flattery directed at most songwriters?

What?! Writers don't pay pubs to demo. Is that what you're saying?

I worked in publishing some years ago both here in Nashville and in New York City and never was a writer asked to pay for the demos or provide funds for anything else. New writers generally don't have that money available. With hundreds of publishing companies in town, I can see some of the smaller ones not being able to pay for all the demos they'd like and in that case, the writer may be asked to bear some responsibility for providing material to pitch, but in MOST cases, it's not a common practice.

My advice to you is to make an appointment with ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC and get the guidance you need. The writer services people at these performing rights organizations are there to help you; make use of that. Call them before you proceed.

Thanks Dave. That's the same advice I've been giving on similar threads. PROs, NSAI and SGA are all excellent resources.
