I moved from NYC to Nashville 6yrs ago and left last year for Portland (TALK about bikeability!). Now that I'm away its easier to flush out what I love and hated about Nashville.

Loved:
THE MUSIC
The beautiful scenery
The cost of living (although the previous poster is right about things not being as cheap as you might think they will be...you'll need a car and everything that goes along with it)
The grocery stores (sounds silly but I'd give my left arm for a Publix!)

Not crazy about:
Social lives revolving around church
Most of our friends weren't natives to the area
The sprawl
A Keeping Up with the Jones' mentality
and #1 the lack of healthy living. Now that we live somewhere where healthy living is an integral part of the area, I realize how much I value it. I just love how everyone here is into eating well and is outside doing something every day.

I disliked not wanting to go to the door at night, when someone knocked or rang the doorbell. I disliked the amount of people that were killed almost dailey on the news for one reason or another. I disliked the dealings with the local people that were so distant or hateful toward someone with a different accent. I disliked the way the work ethics of the people that I worked with made more work for me. I disliked having to go 30 miles on way to get to a halfway decent sporting goods store. I disliked the almost impossible hunting conditions around Nashvile due to me not owning or knowing someone that had over 20 acres of land. I disliked the public hunting and fishing as I always had to watch my pickup and camp due to vandalisim and theft. I disliked some more but I will stop there.

oh but wouldn't it be nice if you could actually use your bike to commute places?

As far as biking cities are concerned Denver has a very extensive system of biking and pedestrian trails that I believe has about 300 miles of paved trails all over town. I could access one of those trails right across the street from my house and go anywhere. They do have a few nice trails here in Nashville but nothing on that scale. I would also agree with the poster who stated that cities like Portland are much more health conscious than they are in Tennessee. After living in Seattle for many years and spending alot of time in Portland and then moving to Denver for a few years and then to Phoenix there's no question that people in the western states are much more active than they are in the south and there's more obeisity in the south. Still, there are so many positive things about Nashville that the good outweighs the bad as far as I'm concerned.

wow...I have never heard such unhappy post regarding my hometown. Nashville was not originally built for commuting and it will take awhile for the infrastructure to catch up with the incredible growth Nashville and it's surrounding counties have experienced. We do have lots of homeless and yes...many came her to make it big in the music industry but didn't make it. I am very thankful that those of you who did not like our fare city have found your utopia. Tomorrow...I will drive my overweight, ignorant, lazy self to work and give a shout out to one less person to deal with on the road.

Gabby, Don't worry, I love Nashville. It was the best decision of our lives to move here. My husband asked for a transfer here because we wanted to get out of the rat race we were in, long commutes, etc. We picked Nashville based on the fact that I went to college here, Austin Peay, and loved it then.

Sorry Gabby... I moved here in 94 and will never leave. Nashville was a saving grace for me. So, you will just have to put up with me on the interstate with the rest of the crazy drivers!

Oh, I hope my post didn't upset you. I've lived in alot of places and all of them have their pros and cons and because this thread is about the negatives of Nashville doesn't mean that there aren't alot of positives as well. I find people here to be genuinely friendly and I like the fact that it's so green and relatively inexpensive. I'm very glad I moved here.

Gabby,

Nashville is a really cool city. I love going there. It has so much offer. Just the music alone, makes it all worth it. I moved here a year ago and I enjoy the city very much. When the infrustructure finally does catch up... look out, world class city here we come!

sorry guys...guess I got a bee in my southern belle bonnet. I have been all over this world and wouldn't live anywhere else. It has its pros and cons but the pros far outweight the cons. I allowed my pride for Nashville to get the best of me. Thanks for all your positive responses to my post...that is why Nashville is so wondeful.
