The way payers (insurance companies, medicare, etc.) pay the hospital is based on the census at midnight. They have to charge you for the day if you are there at midnight to avoid fraud. Don't blame the hospital.
CT Scanners can cost up to $1.2 million for a top notch 64 slice out on the market right now. Add in construction facility installation costs, maintenance of such, infrastructure to support it (image transfer, etc.), plus Technologist time plus people that clean the room, pay the electric bill, buy and wash the sheets you were on, yadda yadda yadda. It is not cheap for the hospital to provide high quality services. Then, on top of that you have to cover costs of those that can't pay. I can go all day and night about this subject. Nashville people are soooooo lucky to have such quality healthcare.
