None of it stuck, thankfully, so I doubt anyone has a picture.

If you look in the freezer section of your refrigerator, you will see about as much snow as I did yesterday.

WHY are Sumner County schools closed today for "inclement weather"? Is it really that bad out there or did they just get one snowflake too many? I'm very near the Sumner border, and there's nothing. The roads are completely dry.

It never ceases to amaze me. I used to live in the mountains (for a ski resort, in fact). We were expected to show up to work even in blizzard conditions. Here, they predict a dusting or "enough snow for a cat to leave tracks" and the schools are closed. LOL.

They live in terror of any kind of bus accident. I'm not exactly sure why it's worse here than in other places; one of my guesses is that they can afford to here. They know that typically there won't be that many days when it snows, so they can afford to be overly cautious and just close the schools (so what if schools are closed for eight days a year; it's already built into the schedule). Someplace like, say, Colorado, doesn't really have that luxury. Again, I'm just guessing.

I don't know how many days they have to allot for inclement weather. When I was a kid, our school system (in a wintry climate) only had THREE days for that purpose and if they exceeded it, the school year had to be extended to make up for the lost days. Of course, that was a LONG time ago (grin).

I'm all for keeping kids safe, but today doesn't seem that threatening. It just seems to me they are cautious to the point it becomes laughable and they are being awfully wasteful with the days off they can use later if we really get measurable snow. It's going up to about 45 degrees today. If the roads are "slick", that will change in about an hour or two. Why not just open late?

This stuff also causes chaos at work every time. The parents have to find alternatives for their kids that are not in school....people will be late and/or absent from work or kids will be brought to work, causing distractions everywhere. Every time the schools make decisions like this it has far reaching effects, even for those that don't have kids in school.

They need to equip the buses with snow tires or something. Send the drivers to classes on how to drive in inclement weather. Normally I'm the first to stay home in snowy conditions (which is why I left the ski resort!) but today's school closing borders on the ridiculous.

Maybe someone in Sumner can describe today's conditions better?

I'm in Sumner County on the border of Robertson County. I'm looking out my window right now and the roads have a thin layer of ice on them. The first thing I said this morning is that I feel sorry for anyone having to go out in this weather.

One thing I've noticed since I've lived in TN is that a lot of road don't have guard rails on them. If a car ever slipped on an icey road, you would go right down an embankment. Roads here can be scarey if not clear.

Here in Metro Nashville, they tell me the first place they look is in the Union Hill area of northwest Davidson County. If there's ice or snow on the road there, even if there's nothing on the roads anywhere else in the county, they close the schools.

I'm afraid it's just one of the quirks you're going to have to live with, MiddleTN. Some things, such as the liquor and wine laws here, or making a mad dash to Kroger when two inches of snow is predicted, just can't be explained by mortals.

My guess is that the country roads towards Portland, Westmoreland, and points beyond still had a good sheet of ice on it. If the roads are shady, too, then it would take even longer to melt. That said...it does seem a tad ridiculous. 2-3 hours late would have made more sense to me.

Barb, and you being from LI know ice and snow. Ice can be worst and that is most likely the reason schools are closed.
I need to travel a road that ajoins the road that is the entrance to my subdivision, it has embankments, so if you slide you can go right in it.
In LI, where I am from, I did not see many roads like that, but oddly enough where I lived in NJ, I was right off a road with embankments. None of them had guard rails.
