Default Self-Sustaining Neighborhoods

Are there any "natural" (as opposed to recent "town center" creations) neighborhoods that have EVOLVED in Nashville over many, many years that are now self-sustaining neighborhoods, but in the heart of the city? Two examples I could give are Virginia-Highlands in Atlanta and Central West End in St Louis...where you are close to downtown, but in a "neighborhood" that has lots of shopping and dining and entertainment choices? Very convenient, very walkable, gentrified...

Hillsboro Village probably comes closest to what you described. There are a few other neighborhoods that come close to that description, but perhaps fails to have one or more of the items you listed.

...even if they fall short of my description?
How is midtown Nashville? What neighborhoods are considered more "upscale" as far as urban living goes?
You are right on track with Hillsboro Village -- I'm looking for a "village" atmosphere -- like I said, walkable.

I've never been to the areas you stated but you might want to check out East Nashville. Definitly a neighborhood vibe. Lockeland Springs and some other neighborhoods on the eastside fit what you desribe. Here's an article in the Knoxville paper from last fall.

In East Nashville, hipsters and families create a funky vibe : Travel : Knoxville News Sentinel

The neighborhoods in and close to the Midtown area that you are referring would be: Hillsboro Village, West End, Belmont, Hillsboro/Vandy, 12 South, Waverly, and Music Row.

What you are seeking is very specific and pretty much concentrated in these areas only. We have limited housing stock like this. The exception would be if you were okay being a little out of the main section of town on the East side in neighborhoods like Lockeland Springs and Edgefield in East Nashville around Five Points. Or the other exception is not having walkability but sort of urban-suburban living right on the edge of everything in the Green Hills, David Lipscomb or Woodmont area where there is definitely a town but it's a quick drive instead of walk.

You really don't have any other options than these unless you want to go to a suburb or compromise a little more. In the case of a suburb, I'd recommend Downtown Franklin where there are historic homes around the charming and historic downtown area.

TN Ryan, I'm 24, female and walk through East Nashville all the time by myself at night. My Street, Shelby, Five Points. The worst that's ever happened is a group of guys yelling I found you Miss New Booty & I secretly liked it.

thanks all...

Are there any townhouses or condos or small, redone single-family homes within actual downtown Franklin for 300K or so that are nice? Or, is that impossible to find?
