Big discussion about this even in the papers but no one looks at the usage all they see is the $.

NES rate changed about 3 months ago from 0.08503 to 0.09891/KWH

The BIG increase on my bill came from the amount I used. The Degree Days for Nov/December was 820 the month before 441. Last year Nov/Dec was 531.
Baby “It’s COLD outside” I used twice as much KWH this month than last month. I blame it on Global Warming

Look at this chart for the Cost of Electricity around the country. I am not complaining, it hurts but Tennessee is still on the low end.

Mine was high last month, but as TNkudzu mentioned, it was unusually cold during that billing period.

Mine was $140 for a modest 3 BR/2 bath home; just one guy and a cat, keeping it about 70 at all times. If it had been more normal weather, and before the rate increase, I would have had a bill of less than $100.

I'm scared to open mine! We changed out our HVAC units from propane to heat pump with propane backup so I know our electric bill will be higher than usual anyway. This on top of already pre-buying our propane for the year.

Mine has increased the past 3 months. In oct. it was $87.00, in nov. $169.00 and in dec. it was $278.00. I'm afraid to see it for jan. I was expecting it to go up some but triple I wasn't expecting.

Have you compared your bill for this time of year to what you were paying the same time last year?

Have you closed the crawlspace vents under your home? Doing this will save your pipes from possible freezing, and keep your home warmer so you don't feel the need to turn up the heat. Just make sure you open them back up in the spring to allow air flow and no mold growth.

Do you turn down the temperature on your hot water heater when everyone leaves for the day? Think about it, when you aren't home no one is using the hot water however it is working all day maintaining that temperature that isn't being used. This would definitely work for Alleycat. Years ago we started turning down our water heater to low (not off) when we left for the day or out of town and we immediately saw a reduction in our power bill. We turn the temperature back up as soon as we pull into the garage and the water is ready to shower in within half an hour or so (faster if you have a gas water heater).

Do you have a hot water heater blanket on? The water heater is outside in the cold garage and is constantly trying to maintain a temperature you set which equates to more electricity. Just like a human it could use a coat to keep warmer. A $25 investment can save you a lot in the future especially if it is located in the cold garage or outside.

My water heater is in the utility room right off the kitchen. Its heated just like the rest of the house. I have one 1/2 of my house closed off. I only heat 1 bedroom, living room, Kitchen/utility room and bathroom.
