Well, maybe it is because it reminds most people on here of Memphis! Hey East Nashville is a great place. By EN, I mean nothing west of gallatin pike, the area that is not marine or myrtle st, nothing that borders w eastland or Cleveland st, no projects or low income apartments, nothing of main st, and well, thats it. East of gallatin pike is usually one of the best places in Nashville. The 5 points area is awsome! But, not Dickerson Pike. I do not know if you have ever been to Detroit, but Dickerson Pike is mini Detroit. I encourage you to move to the East, but not that part. Try something like russell street if it is not too expensive. By the way, I found out that East Nashville as a whole, Antioch, and Madison have a lot more crime than Compton, CA. Just compare them. (I can't send links on this website.)
PS They do not reply to african american much on this forum, but the city of Nashville is very african american friendly. It was rated number 5 on the top ten cities for african americans.(sorry, no links)

Actually I never said anything bad about East Nashville ( that I can remember ) We're actually looking at a house off of Cahal and Chester but are unaware of the area in reguards to crime, I had sent a few PM's about the area but have gotten no replies. Also, I've never been to Detroit but I've been to Memphis and New Orleans ( My wife is from NOLA )
Raymond, The East closest to downtown has a large AA population but the closer you get towards Inglewood, Madison, Rivergate, and into Hendersonville you'll notice the populations start to get more diverse the farther north you go to the extreme of Hendersonville that is mostly white.
A fairly good mix would be Inglewood. I would check out the Inglewood area, It's not really super expensive like some areas in East Nashville.

OK, this is not Raymond. However, you are right about that. The farther North, the more diverse. I would suggest that he move towards the South Inglewood area. Litton avenue area to be exact. That area has a large AA population. Plus it is right by gallatin pike, so it has great access to just about anywhere in that area. Sometimes you do hear about a shooting in the area, and it is close to some section 8 apartments. But that is not too common. I think it is the perfect spot. Look it up on google maps, I do believe you can see images of the street and area.

Thanks TNRanyan23, qwe123safi, and yank 283. I appreciate it, I really do. Just one more question. Is the African American population in East Nashville on the rise or is it decreasing? I want to know what my area will look like in the next five years if I do move. Since the census is updated once every ten years, you will probably not find any websites that give current data. If you do, then please post. If you can not find any current data, then please Nashvillians tell me what you see with your own eyes. Increasing or Decreasing?
Thank you dearly,
Raymond

Go to the area and decide for yourself. The last time I visited Cahal ave was when I lived there a decade ago. Back then, East Nashville would strike fear in the hearts of almost everybody!

That's really a hard question to answer without a census report I would say that there are alot more people moving to the state period and not too many people leaving. It's my personal opinion of course but I think the African American population in East and North Nashville will be around for awhile although I believe the 90's and into the 2000's saw alot of African American familes move to the suburbs of Antioch and Madison. I can tell you from pretty much an everyday experience, I've lived in Nashville in multiple areas and for a stretch of two years was on Jefferson Street everyday. I don't think you'll see too much of a change in the demographics overnight.
I'd say it'll continue to get more diverse as more condos and apartments are built in the city and the younger professionals start moving back into the city from the suburbs but that'll take atleast 10 years if not more to make a major impact on the demographics.

I went over there a few nights ago around 10-11pm and the neighborhood seemed to be quiet ( esp. for a saturday night ) I did notice that alot of the houses had bars on the windows and doors but I'm curious if they have just been there for a really long time or if people are just paranoid, or if they are really there for a reason ?
I don't know, of course, Symrna and Murfreesboro have alot of really low rent so we may end up headed out that way but I swear to all that's holy I HATE I-24.

Yeah I know what you mean. I-24 is extremely bad. If i were you I would stay in Nashville though. I see it getting a huge population boom in the next 10 years. I see more and more people coming here in West Nashville every day. I have also noticed more people in the East Nashville area.(Or maybe it is because the area is getting safer I am not really sure) But I am sure as soon as the Signature Tower is actually built, Nashville will become a lot different- in a good way. Oh yeah, about the bars, I have found that living in CA that most areas in Nashville that need bars only have fences around their houses. Bars in Nashville are usually in the worst of the worst neighborhoods. But, hey, What are the odds of a actually becoming a victim of crime if you do not get involved with bad people? I say go for it.

Gotta answer this.
I live in Madison near Cedar Hill Park. Our neighborhood, along with Graycroft and Neeley's Bend, is a safe area. The area along Gallatin Pike and toward Old Hickory is rougher, and a lot of people seem to think that's all Madison is. Calling Madison crime-ridden because of this area is really unfair to the rest of the city.
Madison's big, with all kinds of diversity: racial, ethnic, socioeconomic. There's some great housing stock here, with stable neighborhoods and long-time residents.
Had to throw that in as an actual resident of Madison.
