Can't really answer your question, but can I ask another?

What's with the Aldi hype? I went after hearing its praise and only found a couple of really outstanding prices.

Mike...Oh no you dittn't LOL! I LOVE Aldi, I could hardly contain my excitement when I found out one was opening near me (Feb. 9th) which is where ceeveg should be shopping soon if he/she still lives on the East Side.

Just to know before you go they will NOT accept credit cards, only debit & cash, not sure about checks. & you will need a quarter to "rent" your shopping cart.

The problem with Aldi is that they have no name brand products, only the generic stuff that is mediocre at best. If you do find a name brand, the price won't be significantly better than Food Lion. I tend to agree with Mike. No deals at Aldi. Price shopping at Food Lion will save just as much and as a bonus, you get food that is actually edible.

When I lived in Gernany 1984-1987 Aldi was the only supermarket...otherwise you went from the produce market to the butcher and so on. The Aldis over here don't seem as nice, especially with produce.

I have friends who swear by Aldi...I've only gone twice...and both times left with nothing.

Wow Ross, the food you had was unedible? Then surely you must have taken advantage of their double guarantee where they refund your money & replace the product. I've never had to do that though.

As far as the national brands having better quality food, I doubt most brands truly are superior. Dateline or 20/20 one of those type shows did blind taste testing with shoppers & many times they preferred the non national name brand item. It was really interesting too because they then went a step further & offered kids a rock with a superman or barbie sticker on it to eat for breakfast or a healthy item that wasn't represented by a brand or character & kids that were old enough to know better picked the rock...advertisers start targeting you when your young Ross so I guess in a way it's not completely your fault you feel that way.

Buying groceries at Aldi is like buying clothes at Ross or TJMaxx. If you're happy espousing the "treasure hunt" mentality, you can find some great buys. If you prefer familiarity and an extensive selection but still want to keep things as cheap as possible, Wal-Mart is probably your best bet.

Replace it with what? Something just as bad? Seriously, most of the time it's just not good quality food. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I'm not into treasure hunting. The canned food we bought at Aldi for ourselves last November went to the Thanksgiving food drive.

It has nothing to do with advertising. It's personal taste. It's the difference between RC Cola and Pepsi or the difference between store brand cereal and brand name. There is a difference and it doesn't cost much more to get better quality food. I guess if I were shopping for a huge family I'd think about it more. They also don't have a lot of the things we need, which means we would still have to go to Walmart or food Lion.

The way everyone talked about it, we thought it would be a great place to shop. I don't see the appeal. It's not like it's a discount supermarket. It's more like the goodwill store, but for food.

If you want some interesting Gourmet Type food. Some requires little preparing, Then go to Trader Joes in Greenhills, its on Hillsboro Road right near the Green Hills Mall.
Prices are excellent and food is of good Quality.

It's interesting the only alternative given, Trader Joe's, is owned by the same family as Aldi, one brother has one & the other has another. Obviously they believe in great products at great prices.
