If they knew it was the grandparents that took the kids, how did they not find them much sooner? Skip tracing programs like Accurint have been around since the early 1990's and could have easily located the grandparents, fake names or not. The fact that these parents were obviously not looking terribly hard for their kids almost lends some credence to the grandparents' accusations.
