Moving from California to Tennessee
We are considering moving to Tennessee sometime within the next 2 to 3 years. Mt. Juliet seems to be my favorite place so far, but we would like information about other cities near Nashville.
We currently live in Sunnyvale, Ca and my husband is an Electrical Engineer with Lockheed Martin. Is there a Lockheed Martin Company near Nashville? Are there any EE jobs in that area?
We also have 3 small children so we will be looking for a safe, family friendly neighborhood. Housing would be affordable to us as long as we could find employment. The average home in Silicon Valley is $800k and WAY out of our budget...
Thanks for any advice!!

There's a lot of need for electrical engineers in the construction field. Nashville is a center for medical construction. I work for a structural engineering firm myself.
The closest thing to working for Lockheed would be one of the automotive plants, I suppose. There used to be a company called Avco Aerostructures here (they built wings for Boeing, McDonnell-Douglas, etc), but I'm not sure if they still have much of an operation here or not. There are a number of other manufacturing companies located around Nashville.

hi sissy910, can't offer you any advice as i am also a fellow californian (san carlos) with an 800K house looking to get out! - just wanted to say hello and you will love the people on this board - they are so friendly! I can't wait to move there and be part of such a beautiful state and a welcoming community.
I am going back for my 2nd trip to nashville in 2 months and have decided on the Franklin/Brentwood area, I hope to buy a house when i am there in may.
Good luck to you!

THANKS!! I'm not sure if Dave's background and interest will fit in the construction field. He primarily work on computer hardware and some software.

Dell has a major operation near here. I'm not sure if they would have need of someone with your husband's experience or not.
Also, in addition to Mt. Juliet, you might want to look at these towns or communites:
Franklin
Brentwood
Kingston Springs
Goodlettesville
Hendersonville
Smyrna/LaVergne
And in Nashville/Davidson County you could look at West Meade, Green Hills, Bellevue,Vanderbilt/Belmont, Hillwood (there are others, I'm just more familiar with these)

Hi and Thanks for replying!
I am a Southern girl myself and am VERY eager to go back to the South. I am originally from Louisiana and my husband is from New Hampshire. Our jobs brought us to CA where we met and got married. We now have 3 kids and would like a more family friendly area to live in. Besides traveling to see family with 3 kids is not easy, so we'd like to be closer. Tennessee has been my favorite for about 3 years now and I am still pushing for us to move. Our only delay is employment. I am a stay at home mom and will continue to be while our kids are young. The lifestyle in CA is not favorable to a one income family. It is just so busy and stressful here that I want to get out!
We are planning to visit some areas around Nashville in July 2007. Can you recommend a nice place to stay for a family of 5 while visiting in the Nashville area?
THANKS!!!

If your husband works for the aeronautic industry, then TN might not be the best choice. That said, Tulsa OK, Greenville, SC, and Huntsville AL all have fairly robust aeronautics industries. Actually Huntsville is more about aerospace. But these other cities are along the lines of TN in cost, atmospehere, and so on. You might want to check them out first. TN doesn't really have an aeronautic industry

You'd want to check the pay scales too. TN is not known for comparable salaries for transplants.

Seattle is another area for aeronautics.... Boeing is there...
But, it's a very large city.... if you move out to the suburbs it's very nice.
It does rain a lot there.
