Public High School is the only caveat for Hermitage as it is zoned to McGavock High School, which has about 3,000 student population. Once you get past this, Hermitage is the best.

I was never in LaVergne nor do I plan on ever being there, but from the satellite photos that I saw, it looks like the poor areas of Mexico City

But they dont HAVE to go to the high school in the zone do they? Couldnt he go to another HS somewhere else even if living in Hermitage? My son is only almost 5 right now. Any input on elementary schools there?

^ My understanding is you can go to any private high school but only to the public school the address is zoned to. As far as Hermitage area is concerned, the entire place I think is zoned to only 1 public HS.

Magnet public schools however can take from other areas but subject to certain guidelines. So, for example, you can be in Hermitage but your kid can study in magnet Nashville School of Arts public HS in Nashville.

Guys, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Brentwood is a few miles West down Old Hickory Blvd. I guess you could say it's close.

Actually locals call this area "Brentioch" (Brentwood/Antioch) as Brentwood is right over the hill on Old Hickory Blvd. You probably won't hear a lot of real estate agents referring to it as that for some reason though. I will say this, the murder was the result of two individuals that had a longtime fued going on (not sure what it was), so I don't believe this incident should be indictive of the usual crime in the area. You can use other criteria, but like most murders, these people knew each other.

I live in Berry Hill in a brand new townhouse development right near the Fairgrounds and I NEVER feel unsafe! The complex is all young professionals with huge flat screens and fancy cars in plain view, but we've never had any problems. I've lived in Green Hills, West End, Hillsboro Village, and Bellevue in my 6 years here in Nashville and I've noticed that the city is full of really great places jammed up against really bad. My tiny road is peaceful, and beautiful, and I can see the fairgrounds and am only 1/2 mile to Nolensville Rd. where it starts to get dicey. Look at how 12th South and Franklin Pike near 8th avenue are changing. You have luxury condos next to dumpy little houses. In reality, almost any part of urban Nashville is just a neighborhood away from the projects and some less than savory areas. If you want to feel really safe then the burbs are your best bet, just try not to die of boredom.

Great points. I'm not sure that some of the people that post on this message board know the extent to which almost all the inner core neighborhoods around Nashville are being revitalized. I sense they only drive to work and back, with the occasional visit downtown. Most of their impressions are negative because they overwhelmingly come from crime reports in the Tennessean and the local TV channels. News is always slanted to the negative. Right off hand I can't really think of any inner core neighborhoods that are on the decline. The only inner core neighborhoods that I can think of that haven't experienced significant gentrification (I use this term as newer residents reinvesting into their neighborhood, not politically or racial) are perhaps Charlotte Park and The Nations? I could be wrong on those as well as it's been awhile since I lived on the west side of town.
