Really? That's crude. No matter if you believe stuff like Global Warming is real or not, lowering your energy consumption has ABSOLUTELY no ill effects on anything. If you're so self-absorbed, think of it as lowering your energy bill.
I think it's especially ironic that someone with the name 'forestmom' would be participating in "Anti-Earth Hour"

At 830 on a Saturday evening, the only light on in my house is a 60 watt lamp. Sorry I won't sit in the dark or cave into peer pressure about something so ridiculous. Oh wait I'm not sorry.
Fine if you buy into the whole global warming mumbo jumbo, but why the need to shove it down everyone's throat and tell us we're wrong? You can't even prove it's real! I don't buy into it at all. Where I live we've had record ice, snow, and cold this winter. So much for warming...
And turning your lights off for 1 hour isn't going to save you a fortune on your utility bill. I had no power for a week from an ice storm 2 weeks before Christmas. My utility bill was not much lower. So think of all of the natural gas and electricity I didn't use for a week as my contribution if you want.
Many people in my area were without power for 3 weeks. People were freezing and in the dark for Christmas. This whole sitting in the dark for an hour is not a big thing around here. It wasn't last year either.
Like I said, my one 60 watt lamp isn't going to cause the end of the world. If you want to sit in the dark, go for it. But don't demand the rest of the world gives in.
I am well aware of how much electricity and natural gas our household consumes. It's far less than many people I know. We also use a great deal less gas than most. I put gas in my car every two to three weeks.
I'm not about to sit in the dark to raise awareness of some fictional global warming issue. If you'd like to sit in the dark, knock your socks off! If you really want to conserve, then you should sit in the dark more than one hour a year.
Maybe I didn't read close enough. I didn't know that we were supposed to be completely dark. As for me, I won't be home (so my house really will be totally dark ), but if I were, I'd probably have a light on in the room I was in, maybe using the time to do something relaxing like read a book or meditate.
I agree that sitting in the dark is a bit useless. However, so many people waste SO much energy, walking out of a room without turning the light off, leaving the water running while they brush their teeth or shave, etc.
I still don't understand why people don't get it. Whether or not you believe in global warming, lowering energy consumption should be a priority for everyone. With gas, gaining energy independence is a matter of economy and security. On the individual level, lowering your electric/gas bills can only be good. And globally, using less resources means more for future generations and a healthier planet.
I don't understand how it, like SO many other things in America in the past couple decades, could have possibly gotten so polarized. I mean, at this point, I would expect people to cheer me on if I started burning forests and killing animals. Seriously, through my eyes, we are THAT bad. The rest of the developed world is either sitting back and laughing at us or staring bemusedly.
