Looking for a diverse, yet safe neighborhood
My husband and I are interested in buying a house in Nashville, but we don't know much about different neighborhoods around town. Our price range is pretty low, $150k, and we want to live somewhere that's diverse, but safe. Not looking for any white flight neighborhoods.
Any suggestions?

Inglewood sounds like an option, but like most of East Nashville, you probably need to do some research regarding the street you may buy a house on. If you do choose this area (area 6, 37216 area code) I would recomend a real estate agent familiar with the area. I am in no means affiliated with this group, but Karen Hoff's real estate team are based in East Nashville. You can do a search on this website for pro's and con's for East Nashville in general. I have lived in Antioch, Bellevue, Hermitage, and Sylvan Park and this is by far the best place I have lived in the Nashville area. I did like Sylvan Park, but was only renting and couldn't afford to buy there at the time. I have lived in Inglewood for over 3 years and have never had anything crime wise happen to me. I do live on a dead-end cul-de-sac, and not on a heavy traffic road. I walk to the park beside Douglas Ave (edge of Eastwood Neighbors) all the time and I see more and more young families there every day. Five houses on the street behind me are being renovated so it's getting better every day. Oh yeah, my new tax assement for my home came in 47+% more than my last one. Although I'm not happy about the possible increase in my taxes (to be fair I could probably sell it for more than the assessment - not bragging, we just started out a little lower than most other neighborhoods), considering the housing crisis, I take it as a sign of a good investment (like other east Nashvillians have stated on here). There's still some bargains to be had, you just need to be patient and make sure it's a right fit. Good luck.

O'yeah, Eastwood Neighbors might also be an option. You might be able to find something in that range on the low/smaller end. It's the area between Eastland Ave and Douglas Ave and Porter Road and Gallatin Road. There's a very popular restaurant on the edge of the neighborhood called Roseppepers, two coffee shops, Eastland Cafe, and The Family Wash (music venue/restaurant on Porter). Also, If you go past Porter going west, there's the Rosebank Neighborhood. It's primarily ranch style houses (some tudors and victorians thrown in) on the northwest side of Shelby Park. I have a friend that has lived there for over 5 years (off of Rosebank Ave near Carter) and has never had a bad experience. Again, I would research the street before buying.

A safe area in EN for less than $150k will be challenging. There is lots of gang activity, especially in the Northern part of EN. A qualified real estate agent should be able to keep you out of the bad areas. We were surprised at the number of gun/drug related juvenile arrests and most of them will admit to some gang affiliation.
Smith Springs Rd near Priest Lake and Bell Rd headed toward I40 are safe and would fit your budget. We live off Smith Springs about 1/4 mile from the lake. The neighborhoods and houses back here are very nice.

There are some really nice houses in the northern part of Inglewood (especially closer to the river - northeast). Some of the nicest homes/streets in Inglewood, but probably way over your price range. rossc must be referencing neighborhoods on the other side of Gallatin and Ellington. I can't comment because I am not that familiar with that area.

You must mean the Western edge of EN. The Northern edge would be Inglewood, which would be an excellent neighborhood.

I'm talking about the Northern part of East Nashville, Madison and North Nashville, including Inglewood. Like many urban areas, there is good and bad in very close proximity to each other. Is the OP going to find a safe area in Inglewood for less than $150K? Unless prices have dropped dramatically in the last year, the answer is no. It's hard to find a run down flip house for that in a nice area.
It's still worth looking because you could always luck up on a foreclosure or desperation sale. If safety is a concern, that area REQUIRES a real estate agent who knows the area very well. Unless I were looking for a project house, with a budget of <$150K, I wouldn't even bother looking in that area. When we were looking a year ago, we did a pretty exhaustive search in EN.

Okay, most people consider the borders of East Nashville as the Cumberland River to the East, Briley Parkway to the North (Before Madison), and 24/65 Interstate. Add in there the East Bank (Titans Stadium area). Anything west of the 24/65 merger would be considered North Nashville. Just to clarify for the original poster, as I believe they are thoroughly confused now. I would repeat that Northern Inglewood is a nice area (at least on the east side of Gallatin road, the area I'm familiar with - I have drove around the Inglewood area west of Gallatin road and it didn't seem that bad. A little isolated from the rest of us, but not extremely ghetto - ranch style houses that are well taken care of for the most part). If anything, parts of South Inglewood and "The Wedge" (Area separating Inglewood/Eastwood Neighbors and Rosebank - Porter Road area) are the ones that are considered "up and coming" and where the poster may find a deal. I do know there are a lot of houses that are being renovated in that area right now.Of'course the original poster hasn't commented again so I doubt they are reading this anyway.
