Just by looking at the map I'd say not. That whole area is very tricky when buying real estate.

Terrible area. Runs alongside the worst part of Dickerson Rd. If you are moving from out of town and considering East Nashville, do a LOT of research on the area before buying. There are some gems there, but you need to know your stuff before taking the plunge.

It's definitly an up and coming. The area is being gentrified but there still going to be higher than normal crime. There's some really nice housing stock in that area. I believe about 5 to 7 years ago you were more likely to see prostitutes and drug dealers than you would people pushing their babies in their strollers or walking their dog, which is more likely now. Like Pimpy said I would definitly do some research. You could buy there and be sitting on a goldmine in the future. I have no doubts that the area will be considered one of the nicer neighborhoods (like Lockeland Springs is now) in the not so distant future. I also personally think that that area of Dickerson Pike will be a vibrant commercial district one day. It'll take awhile but I truly believe that. Here are some links regarding the revitalization of Dickerson Pike.

Buffalo To Return To Dickerson Pike - NewsChannel 5.com - Nashville, Tennessee -

Nashville Buffalo

District 7 is a tightnit community that watches out for each other. Vernon Winfry (Oprah Winfrey's dad, Oprah grew up in that neighborhood and went to East Literature High) is actually building a development near there.

Winberry Place - Home

If you have lived in an Urban area or have friends that live in East Nashville you might want to invest in a property there. I did meet one guy who moved to rental property in that area fresh out of MTSU, not knowing a soul in East Nashville, who hated it. He had just read about 5 Points and thought he would like the area. Problem is, even though it's close, it can seem a million miles away. It's a street to street thing. He just happened to move into a house next to a house full of gangbangers. Add into that, he was renting and not buying (knowing that you have extreme house appreciation will help you deal with a lot of things). If you do decide, a big dog, an alarm system and a roomate solve alot of problems. Anyway Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Correction - District 5. Here's an example of the residents not putting up with business as usual in that area.
Ethics complaint filed with state against councilwoman Murray | Nashville City Paper: Nashville's Online Source for Daily News

This all stems from Murray trying to pass an amendment to allow street vending on Cleveland (maybe McFerrin also?). So anyone wanting to sell their goods, socks, used lawn mowers, whatever could set-up show right there in the neighborhood. She was also trying to change zoning for a Madison man (who owns 12 properties in the area) who illegally divvied up one of his building into a quadroplex (300 something square foot each firetraps) against codes. The guy was a big campaign contributer for Murray. They are trying to rid the neighborhood of out of town slumlords who have been able to railroad legitimate homeowners that live in the area. Channel 5 has also found out that Murray is an admissions counselor for a methadone clinic in Detroit and it lists her hours as 6AM to 6PM. Pretty sketchy.

Anyway, sorry for the long diatrabe. Just giving you the full story. It's a lot easier to say "that's a horrible area" and not give the facts and what positive is going on there.

Hey thank you all soooo much. For the time being we are going to rent until we find what area we like and if we even want to stay in Nashville. As of right now we are looking at a town home in Glengarry Heights. The area looks decent enough......there is a not so great area down the road a bit.....but that is to be expected.
