Desirable, crime and safe all depend on what part you're looking at. Got an address or a street? Schools will be metro and not considered the best. From what I hear, you're OK through elementary school. Beyond that many look to private schools.
We live in 37217 near Priest Lake and like it. It's safe and we haven't heard of any crime in the area neighborhoods.

The nice thing about the area around the lake off of Smith Springs Rd is that the houses are very affordable and the neighborhoods are very nice and safe. It's the only area we looked in were we felt we were getting a good deal. There were other houses in the same price range elsewhere, but they all had pretty steep downside...Run down looking neighborhoods or high crime. My neighbor just sold his 1450sq\ft ranch for $139K.
We had some Bobcat work done today and the guys commented that it was like being out in the country but 10 minutes from the city.

Where is the line between Antioch and 37217 in that area? I remember looking back off Smith Springs near the lake in 2007 and liking what I saw, but was turned off because the places I was interested in all had Antioch addresses and zip codes.

So you liked an area but decided not to buy because of the name and zip code ?

We're 1/4 mile off of Smith Springs Rd and about a 1/2 mile from Bell Rd (towards the lake) and we are in Nashville. An Antioch address wouldn't have turned us off. It's not the Antioch that everyone talks about. That small group of neighborhoods near the lake is the only Antioch address we would ever consider.

Zip code matters. Ask any real estate agent worth his salt.
