Whole Foods, Traders Joe's and Target/Walmart, and what's the best way to get to them without a car (Walking, Public Transportation?)

Also what's the time duration?

If you're living around Vandy you won't need a car just take the number 7 Hillsboro bus to Whole Foods & Trader Joes, about 10 minutes with all of the stops, longer with heavy traffic.

For Target & Wal-Mart you'll need to catch the number 7 Hillsboro bus from Vandy & ride to the bus transfer station Downtown. When you arrive at the bus station you will be at Bay 19, take the number 10 bus out to Charlotte Pike, it sits at Bay 21. I haven't taken that specific route so I can't give you a timeframe but I've heard that the bus actully pulls into the Wal-Mart parking lot. If you want to go to Target it's the same #10 bus because they are both on Charlotte but you'll need to pull the cord to let the driver know you want to get off & you will be let off at the road, not in the parking lot, like you are at Wal-Mart.

Just to warn you, the public transportation here is not what you're probably used to if you're coming from any other up-and-coming city. Simply put, it sucks.

Another option for you would be to buy a "garage sale car," as Dave Ramsey would say, for about $500-1000, off Craigslist. It probably won't impress the girls, but given the fact you're considering coming here with no car at all, that probably isn't a concern to you. A cheap, ugly car is the best theft deterrent, so you can pretty much keep it parked anywhere and only take it for a spin when you need to go somewhere that isn't within walking distance from Vandy.

Taking the bus to walmart would be horrible. the solution to avoiding a car is to MAKE FRIENDS that have a car. This is not difficult; just be nice. And enjoy the lack of wondering if practically your entire state is going to fall off into the Pacific the next time a nice big earthquake hits.
