Default Trying to find a place in downtown

Well, I feel like I am faced with an impossible task of finding somewhere to live in downtown for no more than $800. I think I have looked on Craiglist everyday for the last 2 months.
I work in downtown and getting ready to move in 2 months. I have no car and no relatives here, so I would need to get something right in downtown so that I could walk to work. I've considered searching around West End area as well, but the prices don't seem to be any cheaper at all, and I would have to ride a bus. Which may sound silly, but I am terrified of riding a bus. I just always have this visual in my mind that it will be late and the bus is not going to come and I'll be walking at night for like 5 miles, encountering strange and scary homeless people.
I am just so frustrated. I don't like an idea of a roomate, so many horror stories and also, all the roomate ads say "no pets", I have a precious indoor cat thats very dear to me, I wouldn't dream of giving her up.
I mean all I want is something small, like a studio, it just have to be clean, I have a problem sharing my living space with insects. All I see is those ads for a high dollar Lofts, which I have no idea who those places are designed for in this time of recession. Certainly not for something who is looking forward to their every paycheck.
So, that is my dilemma.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please share them with me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Where would you be working? What intersection? There are some older apartments, but depending on where you live and work, even downtown, you may not be able to walk to work. Especially when it's pouring down rain... or sweltering hot. There's a "Park It Downtown" shuttle that serves the area that you may be able to use to get around. There are also limited options for shopping downtown. There is a new urban grocery store, but it's amidst what you're probably calling "high dollar lofts."

I just recently moved back to Brentwood from Chicago and before I left I lived downtown for 6 months. The place I lived at was called Metro Manor. It is an older building but really well maintained if you ask me and the staff are great. There is a pool on the top of the building which is really nice with a gazebo area for sitting, eating and drinking. There are two elevators to use to get to your floor and I never experienced any outages. I paid $600.00 a month for a studio with utilities included except for electric. You have H.G. Hill's Urban Market just a short walk away, restaurants, night life and public transit at your door step. Granted, there aren't many places to go and get those new pair of shoes or shorts you want but you could easily get on the bus and go to Green Hills Mall or OpryMills. The bus system doesn't run as frequent as some outsiders might think so time should be taken into consideration when venturing outside of downtown.

If you plan on just staying in the Downtown, West End, and Green Hills area and using public transit you could purchase a bike and use that in conjunction with public transit. Downtown Nashville is livable without a car but it is limited on some things like shopping. Here is a link to the apartment guide listing of Metro Manor Metro Manor Apartments Nashville, TN - Apartments for Rent in Nashville Tennessee

The guy you would most likely be speaking with is Steve and he's a great guy as if all the staff there. I promise, everyone is nice but your not going to be living at The Carlyle either. It also fits into your price range. I think you would enjoy living there as I did and so many others. I probably sound like a salesman but I do not work for them in any way... I just lived there for 6 months and I'm telling you my experience.

I live in Capital Towers, right across the street from Metro Manor. Electric is included in my rent and they do allow pets-I don't think Metro Manor does. They have studios and 1 bedrooms that would probably fit your price range.

Capitol Towers would be the first thought I would have as well. Good suggestion, pretyy fantastic location for downtown access at a reasonable price. If you end up looking outside of the downtown core, we have a unit in midtown near Baptist available. 2b/2b $900.
