Burns, TN has excellent schools and affordable living with just a short drive to Nashville. It also has close access to parks and much family friendly activities.

Pam-I'm in Houston but know Nashville area like a book. If you want to be an hour or two away from great camping and hiking in the many and growing preserves of the Cumberland Plateau and still be near Nashville, check out Mt Juliet, Lebanon, Smyrna, LaVergne, Murfreesboro. These areas have flatter terrain than Williamson Co but are closer to the Cumberland Plateau. Keep in mind East Tn has the mountains but cultural and job opportunities don't match up to Nashville region. Also Rutherford Co is closer to Chattanooga, Atlanta

Hendersonville is a great place to live and bring up children. The schools here are very good I have never heard about any problems. My husband and I love it.

Most of the smaller towns in the counties surrounding Nashville are pretty nice. Each of them have their pluses and minues. There's Mt. Juliet, Hendersonville, Franklin (somewhat expensive), Brentwood (expensive), Kingston Springs, Pleasant View/Cooperstown, Murfreesboro, Smyrna, LaVergne, Nolensville, and several others.
The economy is good in Nashville and the surrounding areas, so if you have experience and skills, you should be able to find employment without too much difficulty.
Have any idea of the type of work you'll be looking for?

Hermitage is great, or Mt. Juliet. They're both just 5-8 miles east of Nashville.

Just a note to scrammy (since I don't really have any housing/location advice of value to offer or add) about camping in Tennessee: Fall Creek Falls State Park. I'm not an outdoorsy person at all myself, but I know this place from my son (who is about to graduate from college) going to camp there each summer from the time he was about 10 years old. Google "Fall Creek Falls" and you'll find lots of info. Gorgeous place. It was one of the filming locations for the 1994 live-action version of The Jungle Book. Thought it might be a place you'd want to check out for a great camping location.
Looks like tent camping is allowed. It's in Pikeville, TN, about 2.5 hours from Nashville.
If you want more info, I'm sure others on the forum would be able to tell you more about it.

Pleasant View
Pleasant View is a nice town with a short commute into Nashville or the surrounding suburbs via I-24. The Briley Parkway is now finished, which allows a decent commute to areas east and south of Nashville, if you want to avoid downtown. I-24 north of Nashville gets fairly busy, but should be widened in the next 10-15 years.
While the town is small at about 4,000 people, it has grown by about 2,000 in the last 10 years. The people are nice, there are good schools, and there is relatively affordable housing if you have two incomes. We have moved here
in the past year, and really like it.
As far as amenities go, Pleasant View has about 5-6 restaurants, and is getting more, several very nice subdivisions, and a development called Pleasant View Village, which you have to check out. The downtown area has some neat stores - the Livery Stables Antiques, Blue Springs Gifts, and the Essence Oasis Day Spa. A new home decor and gift store called Pleasant Home just opened up, and my wife loves it. She did a lot of her Christmas shopping there.

You won't regret going to Fall Creek Falls State Park. I went there a few weeks ago, and it was one of the best state parks I've been to!
It has some wonderful hiking areas, beautiful scenery and only about an hour and 45 min. from Murfreesboro!
