I would go with either Brentwood or Franklin -- they have the best schools. Although there are areas of Nashville that are more diverse, they have terrible public schools, with the exception of magnet schools such as Hume Fogg, which are extremely difficult to get into. I wouldn't risk it.

Just to qualify my request. I have no aversion to living in a multicultural environment. In fact that’s all my children know. However, the key portion of the compound word multicultural is cultural. It is important that my children learn and identify with their own culture and being taught African American History by my wife isn’t enough. I understand someone that has always lived in areas where their culture has been dominant not understand that. Pimpy’s comment about East St. Louis and Compton speaks to why I made this request in the first place. I truly hope that does not reflect your opinion of us. If it does I feel sorry for you and encourage you to visit the Cascade Heights section of Atlanta GA, or the Winfield section of Philadelphia or one of several other affluent African American communities across the US and around the world. Places nothing like Compton, St. Louis or a trailer park.

I apologize for some of the responses to your question, and hope they don't affect your opinion of our city.

I'm not aware of any middle class African American neighborhoods in Nashville. The suburbs outside of Davidson County are overwhelmingly white --- less than 5% African American in most of them -- as are some of the inner ring suburbs, mostly to the west.

However, the closer you get to downtown, neighborhoods get more diverse.

Davidson County itself is majority white -- about 65% -- so there aren't the numbers to have even predominantly AA middle class neighborhoods.

But we might be able to recommend some areas that come close to what you're looking for. How much did you want to spend on housing?

No apology necessary, I didn’t take offence to responses. However, I sincerely appreciate your response. We are looking to spend something between 250 and 300K. My wife is still debating on if she wants to continue homeschooling or start a business. I think she’s leaning towards the business not withstanding there is no guarantee I can match my salary there. But it’s all about who you know and the same GOD that got us where we are is GOD in Tennessee we I’m expecting HIM to come through. Either way the quality of the schools in the area is very important to us as is a reasonable African American presents in the community. Thank you and everyone for you help.
Also several people have posted names of developments but I’m finding it challenging to locate him without the city or county name.

If you look up Stonewood, Stewart Springs or Stewart Creek Farms, they're all in Rutherford County. Stonewood is in Smyrna while the other 2 are in Murfreesboro. Berkshire is also fairly diverse and it's in Murfreesboro as well.

Good luck!

As others have rightly said, Nashville and its surrounding areas really have no affluent or upper-middle class predominantly (or significantly) black neighborhoods. Interestingly, a friend and I were discussing this fact recently (she is considering moving elsewhere where educated, decently off blacks are not such an anomaly). That said, if you are coming here, want a nice home in a low-crime neighborhood that is zoned for the better public schools, then you are going to have to move to a predominantly white neighborhood. Depending on how far up the economic echelon you are, for blacks who can afford to do so and value the aforementioned things, that means living in Bellevue, West Nashville (Belle Meade/West End/Forest Hills/Green Hills) or in another county, such as Williamson or Rutherford.

Nashville is not Atlanta or Philly or any other major metro that is large and diverse enough (racially and economically) to have well-off black burbs. It's just not happening here.
