Question New to Nashville

I'm going to move to Nashville from Madison, WI for my first job there. I've read many similar posts trying to find a good place to live, but it seems different people have different concerns. I really appreciate if anyone could give me some advice for my case.

I'm now looking for an apartment to rent. My main concern is safety and distance to work (zip 37214). I'm at the mid of my twenties and would like to be in a diverse neighborhood. As long as the rent is not more than 900/month, it would be OK for me to temporarily settle down.

I would love to see any suggestions and opinions on where I should look. I'm looking forward to moving there! Thanks very much in advance.

You could probably find something in either Donelson and Hermitage that would work for you. You would be close to work, the rental rates are probably a little lower there than in some other parts of towns, and both areas are reasonably nice, safe, and clean. If you're sensitive to noise, make sure you don't rent something directly in the flight path from Nashville International Airport, which is nearby.

You might even look in Mt. Juliet.

Hey, welcome to Nashville. I am from Madison myself. I don't really know rental rates or commute times here, but I would consider looking at Hillsboro/Belmont area first, then maybe Midtown/Gulch if you like Condo style living or East Nashville if you are looking for something like Willy Street.

good luck.

I moved here from Northern Illinois, Madison is one of my favorite places. You're gonna love our Winters.

Hillsboro/Belmont would probably be a little higher rent-wise than you wanted to spend. The same with the Gulch.

I would recommend the Donelson or Hermitage area. The rent would probably be closer to what you want to pay, plus you would be closer to work.

One additional suggestion since you're a newcomer, stay aware from the Antioch area (the area south of the airport). We've had a number of discussions here about just how bad the area is; the opinions range from "it's not as bad as people say" to very negative. For a new arrival it's probably better just to avoid the area; there are plenty of other places to live. In the future, after you get to know the city, you can decide for yourself what your opinion is of Antioch.

In Antioch do they have bars on their windows? No. Do they have have fences around their homes? No. This suggests that the people are comfortable living there.

Aside from people's opinions, lets look at facts. Are there any housing projects in Antioch, or even the surrounding areas for miles until you hit the area directly under downtown? No.

Is there a lot of development going on in the area? Yes. I forgot the community exactly but it has lots of condos and neat streets. In fact, it is on Nolensville rd, the street that seems to strike fear in the heart's of so many Nashvillians.

Is Antioch perfect, by no means. Is it an eye sore, no. Antioch is just a suburb.

oakland2nashville, my comments were addressed to a person just moving to the area and who is not familiar with Nashville. As I mentioned, people have differing opinions of Antioch. Antioch is a fairly large area, so it might be unfair to paint a whole area with the same brush, but I would still recommend that a new arrival avoid the Antioch area until they get to know the city better. After that, they can make an informed decision if, for whatever reason, they want to consider Antioch as a place to live.

I know. I was just voicing my opinion.

Actually, East Nashville has been in news quite a bit lately. The Antioch area near Priest Lake is a nice and safe area.
