Default Would you say Nashville meets this description?

Would you say Nashville is pretty middle-of-the road in the sense that it:

Is neither overwhelmingly liberal or conservative

Has a decent local economy, but is definitely still an affordable place to live

Has stuff to do, but is still somewhat laid back?

It would take a few qualifiers, but, yes, I think that would be fairly accurate in many ways.

As far as the liberal/conservative thing, it would depend somewhat on where you're coming from. Someone from some of the northern, heavily Democratic states might think it's more conservative than balanced. The Democrats here tend to be a little more conservative than, say, those in California or Massachusetts. A good example is the governor; even thought the state overall is conservative, the Democratic governor has a fairly high popularity rating because he's fairly conservative when it comes to taxes and financial issues and doesn't get too involved in some of the more controversial "hot button" issues which some Democrats advocate.

Another possible qualifier would be house prices. Some people move here and are quite happy with the cost of buying a house in a nice neighborhood; others are slightly surprised that house prices are as much as they are in Nashville. Most people are pleasantly surprised by utility costs, no income tax on wages, the fairly low property taxes, and certain other items, but are shocked by the sales tax rate (the main source of income for the state is the sales tax), especially that it's so high on food.

Just my opinions. I'm sure others will have a different take on the question.

If you are talking about the city of Nashville, it is pretty middle of the road politically with a slight liberal leaning.

If you are talking about the Nashville Metropolitan Area it is overwhelmingly conservative.

We just got back from Nashville and it definitely seemed conservative. There are churches everywhere and on the radio they bleeped out words in songs that in LA they would just leave. I didn't see any "freaks" like I see all the time living in LA. Politically they are a Republican state.

Housing is very affordable. Shockingly affordable IMO.

People did seem laid back. Where I live people have such crazy road rage and everyone is in a hurry. When we went out to eat, everyone seemed to take their time which is a good quality to me.

Actually, Nashville (the city) is quite liberal. The outer areas are a bit more conservative. Davidson County is actually one of the only counties in TN that usually votes blue.

Actually, Memphis is the bluest county in the state. What you've had in Middle and West Tennessee are lots of Blue Dogs like Quillin, Davis, Gordon and Cooper, who's actually more liberal than BD. There are a smattering of true blue smaller counties in West TN. THey escape me right now, but they're rural and small.

There are also several rural counties that usually go democrat.

Jackson and Houston County in middle TN went for Obama

Haywood and Hardeman in west TN went for Obama.
