My husband and 9 year old daughter are moving from Southern California to Nashville. Looking for guidance to find a nice, safe, friendly, family-oriented area with good schools (gosh hope public schools are an option.) Work downtown but willing to commute. We love neighborhood activities and people focused on raising kids. Medium size home, maybe 3,000 sq ft. Appreciate comments on great areas to explore, schools, recreation, arts, taxes, commutes to downtown

How much are you wanting to spend? I live in Brentwood and it definitely meets the critera you have stated. We have lots of So. Cal people in our neighborhood & in Brentwood/Franklin in general because of Nissan relocating to Franklin. Commute is good- 20 min. or so depending on where you live. Brentwood is the first suburb to the south of Nashville. Schools are consistently rated the best in the state. Plenty of recreation activities for the kids. You would get better recreation (outdoor) options in Hendersonville for adult. Taxes are much lower in Williamson County than Davidson County (although probably both will be laughable to you since you are used to Cal. taxes).
I would definitely put Brentwood on your list to consider. It is definitely a family area. We live, go to school, and play sports with all the same people. It has a real community feel.

Hendersonvillel still has a lot of home for the money. It's also a nice community with great public and private schools.
