I, personally, would prefer Murfreesboro over Spring Hill because it is a true city and offers a LOT more housing value for your money. You really need to compare the type of homes you get in each area to understand the difference. That being said, many people really like living in Williamson County and just find it a better fit for their family.
You will find excellent schools in both areas, and both cities are going to be a fairly long commute into downtown Nashville. The biggest difference in M'boro is you won't be going into Nashville for your entertainment and dining needs - unless of course you just want to! Many people work in Nashville that live in both M'boro and Spring Hill.
M'boro is very convenient to Franklin via I840, I can cut over to Brentwood in no time by going backroads through Concord Road, shoot over to Mt. Juliet or be at the airport in 20-25 minutes, or drive into Nashville in 35 minutes...as long as I don't hit rush hour! For my family, M'boro has been the most centralized location given the fact that I have family and friends all over Middle TN. After all, M'boro IS the exact geographical center of the state! If neighborhoods and a family environment is important to you, I would really suggest that you spend at least a day in M'boro. Most families make the decision on which area fits their lifestyle best fairly quickly once they spend a little time in each area.

SH over M'boro
Williamson Co schools are better then the surrounding areas. Be careful when moving to Spring Hill that you choose a spot that is zoned for Williamson Co. schools. The city strattles the county line. The north side of the county is the Will. CO. area.

It sure is. My daughter is a Freshman at MTSU.
There is also a brand new shopping center opening up.
