Pubs in Cookeville
There is some great discussion about some awesome restaurants in Cookeville. My wife and I are not above a nice pub once in awhile. Doing a Google search showed three pubs but no links. Can anyone enlighten us as to the offerings in the downtown in this arena?
Thanks

Crawdaddy's has a great bar upstairs (the restaurant is downstairs) and a cool terrace for outdoor eating and drinking. It's downtown at 53 West Broad.
I did a Google search, and the three "pubs" listed are The Factory, Spankie's, and Jim's Inn. I wouldn't consider any of those as pubs. The Factory is a big college hangout located in, well, an old factory downtown. Spankie's is a wonderful restaurant near the university that has a nice bar. Jim's Inn is an old burger joint left over from the days before the interstate existed, I guess now it's just a bar.
Keep in mind that the liquor laws in Cookeville prohibit bars from serving alcohol other than beer unless they also serve food and have at least 80 seats (I think that's the number). I think that's one reason Crawdaddy's is a popular watering hole because its bar is on a separate floor from its restaurant.

Thanks
Thanks JMT for the information. When I do a seach on Google, I get a few different options: Scottys, Poes and McClouds. Are you familiar with any of these? Thanks for your help.

I was in Cookeville today and happened to see Scotty's. It looks like a dump. When I think "pub" I think something sophisticated with dark wood, brass railing, dart boards, you know, like an English pub. Scotty's looks like a honky-tonk.
Don't forget, only larger restaurants in Cookeville are allowed to serve liquor. If you go to a place like Scotty's, all you can get is beer.

Beer is Good Too
Thanks for responding JMT. I actually think of a pub as serving primarily beer, so I am cool with that. Must be the Irish in me. Speaking of Irish, are there any type of Irish establishments in town? We will determine if we are moving soon, and I continue to read the posts about Cookeville. It really does seem like a great family town. And with the University in town, it adds a bit of acedamia, which we like.

I don't think there's an Irish establishment in Cookeville. In fact, I'm not even sure if there's one in Nashville. There used to be one in downtown Nashville, but it went out of business a couple of years ago. I live in Knoxville and am not familiar with something here, either. Maybe you could help start one!
And I agree with you, I think Cookeville is a wonderful town that is a blend of a college town, a family town, a retirement town, a bourgeois town, and a blue collar town. It's got a little bit of everything. Like you, I particularly like the spirit of academia which seems to permeate the community.
Let us know how your move goes.

The Google that listed McClouds' as an Irish pub was partly right, but several years too late.
McClouds actually started out as McGregors, then was bought out & changed to McClouds. It was in a nice spot on the courthouse square. Good food(I ate there twice),cool atmosphere.I don't know how authentic things were though cause I don't guess I've ever been to a real Irish pub...
Alas,it was only open a year or so...and after they moved out some guy cooking porkchops in the apartment above it set the building on fire! You can still see the remnants of that.

Cookeville seems to be fairly capable in that regard.I'm sure it could be better, but my father-in-law is in a wheelchair & dosen't have much trouble getting around places that I know of. I'll ask him more about that...
Cookeville does have disable transportation,it's called "UCARTS",which is Upper Cumberland Area Regional Transportation System. They dont have regular routes (yet) but will come pick you up if you call.
As for your birds,I'm sure they would be welcome too!

Scotty's Pub is indeed a total dump. I have no clue why they even call it a "pub." Only beer is served there which is usually not cold. The whole place is filthy and the bathrooms are disgusting! Some of the bar stools are falling apart, there is no hot water and the toilets barely flush.
The owner is a really rude man. The barmaids are really rough-looking chicks and if you don't pay attention and count your change due, they'll short-change you. People will steal your change, cigarettes and whatever you have on the bar if they get the chance.
It's a really rough bar with rough clientele. They play music so loudly that you can't even think. The parking lot is gravel and people peel out spraying gravel all over your car which sucks. Fights are a common sight as well and there is no bouncer or security.
There's nothing Irish about the place and definately no Irish beer.
In general, it's really a horrible place and has been that way for years and years.
Most of the bars on Highway 70 (east and west), are rough and can be quite dangerous after dark.
