There's a show I used to watch about this woman that rescues animals and now I can't remember the channel, her name or the name of the show. After 40 I can't remember anything, LOL. Anyway, the only thing I do remember is she is from the south and she is a Realtor. Does anyone know the show, her name or her web site? Thx
I'd really love it if they would do a few shows about the thousands of volunteer drivers who help transport dogs all over the country every weekend, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, etc.
Not that I think it's necessarily a bad thing that she utilizes a paid transport company but it's not the only option available to someone who wants to adopt a dog from a far away location.
Oh cool! They're the group that transported our Simba to his new home in New York last month. I didn't realize that's who you were talking about. Never saw the show but my adoption coordinator did and got in touch with the singer guy that was on the show and he did some events with us to try to get adoptions up. Nice guy - wife too.

YES!! that was my only real complaint with this show..... these paid transporters get anywhere from $125 to $200 per dog..... and i just don't see how 2 or even 3 people can properly care for SO SO SO many dogs on these transports..... they are crated in the dark trailers for however many days it takes to get from point a to point b .... at least with volunteers, they are riding in cars with close human contact and walks and water every hour or 2....
i know that paid transporters have a niche.... but wish that a show about rescuing dogs would also show the armies of road warriors that are out every single weekend of the year......
i even sent an email to animal planet about this ..... got a standard form reply back.... but hope that someone somewhere there took notice.....
disclaimer: i did transports and a home visit thursday, friday and saturday this week..... over a thousand miles total...... and 9 dogs on their way to better lives......

I always said I'd never use a paid transport. Until I found there was no other way to get a foster to his adoptive home. I gave in. I was sick and left in tears when I dropped him off, just because I knew he didn't understand why he was stuck in a kennel. But in the grand scheme of his life, it was a tiny blip. He's now safe with his new family in NY.
Would I rather he go on a transport with volunteer drivers in a car? Oh God yes!!!!! But sadly, the routes don't always link up. But yes, the road warriors are always my first choice. I'm just learning there are some to avoid. I had a very nasty e-mail back and forth with one of them. Some get on a high horse and think they should be able to run the rescue if they're going to transport. I have issues with that. If you're not comfortable with me making the decision on the adopter don't bother to respond. It's simple. Don't tell me you need to contact the adopter and have a home visit done and you need to send someone to my home to make sure you approve of me as a rescue. Either you can help drive or you can't.
We did find a great transport group - they are paid though - out of Missouri. It's a couple that has an airport shuttle bus type vehicle. They've got about a dozen or so kennels in there and a small couch. They bring their three dogs and both of them take turns driving while the other keeps an eye on the dogs in the back. It was packed full of paper towels and cleaning supplies and dog treats. They were very friendly. They just moved 11 dogs from here to the rescue in Chicago that's been helping us. They were wondeful! With a group like that it's hard to find enough people to volunteer the trip with 11 dogs, and most of them large. Sometimes we're stuck using paid. But at least it's good to know there are some better paid transporters out there.
yeah ... i got in on the tail end of that little email exchange between you and the coordinator.... even added my $.02 .... .... i have driven for her and have great respect for you and for her.....
and sounds like you found a good paid transporter.... and out of MISSOURI, no less..... i can see managing 12-14 dogs with 2 people and they are in the vehicle WITH the dogs, so can be aware if an issue arises suddenly...... but the transporter shown on last chance highway has upwards of 80-100 dogs kenneled in a trailer on each run.... ....
i absolutely understand that paid transporters serve a purpose and fill a need..... i see volunteer transports fail all the time because they can't find enough drivers... that is heartbreaking and i have stepped up at the last minute on more than one occasion.....
just no perfect answer.... as with anything in life.....
