GIven the chance, taiga, cats will eat lizards. If we spot them hunting one in our house, we rescue the poor little thing.
DH was weeding the neighbor's yard this a.m. and found a cute little black snake hiding along the bottom of their garage door.
Thanks, NMS. That surprises me. Aren't lizards coldblooded? As much as we love our furry felines, we definitely know that they can be coldblooded. I used to see my cat chase gartersnakes and swat at them, but I never saw her do anything other than that with a snake.
We have about 100 (no exaggeration) starlings and blackbirds in our front yard and street, looking for breakfast. Our cat Bumper just wants to make friends with them......

She promised not to eat any. Uh huh.
Well, it looks like the birds have started their migrations. Today, I saw two pairs of sandhill cranes (but they're here year-round) and some Muscovy ducks. Love those ugly things.

DH is still sore, so I walked by myself this morning. Some wonderful bird sightings. First, a pair of ducks honked at me from behind, then made a heck of a splash when they landed. Then, about 10 steps after that comedic sight, our resident bald eagle flew right in front of me, soared up over the lake and off he went. What a magnificent bird he is.
Not so sure I like this part of nature. I have about 70 (yes 70) geese on the pond in front of my house. They are making quite a mess of things......feathers and you know what every where.

Oh, Larks, I can relate. Their "presents" drove us away from our favorite spot up north. Barnhardt Island on the St. Lawrence River. We'd take a lunch up there, sit and read, hubby would carve sometimes, watch the river go by. Till the geese left their calling cards and we couldn't find a place to park without getting dirty or smelling it.

A couple of brave ones came and left their "calling cards" on my sidewalk.

The geese are everywhere around me. I love hearing them in the morning and night--it's their deposits that are unwelcome.
Lately, the squirrels in my yard have been more active than usual. They scurry about, collecting walnuts and depositing them in places which they will probably never find again. They bury several walnuts every year, and in the spring I have little walnut trees growing in the grass. They're nearly impossible to pull out by hand because of the big nut at the end, so I have to dig them out with a shovel. It's so fun to watch the squirrels at work and at play, though. I love it when they chase each other around and wrestle on the ground!
Last weekend, when I was at a camp less than 15 minutes from my home, I was packing up my car on Sunday afternoon and saw two vultures circling overhead. I didn't even know we had vultures in this area! They kept flying behind the trees, but I managed to capture one in a photo.
