mine are finally all down, i think. i sure squished a bunch of them in the driveway over the last few weeks, despite picking up hundreds of them.
now there are all the leaves to deal with.
We have a mulching lawn mower. No raking and it feeds the lawn.

GOOD BYE poor mr.cicada
I thought that about the a lizard I saw on the bricks by the front door a couple of days ago.
Larksong, bjh and pj8 got it right
I know them as osage orange/monkeybrain tree. There's a website offering to sell them by the boxful. Apparently they have great insect repellent qualities. the wood from this tree is even better than oak as firewood but it's hard enough that it will quickly put the dull on a chainsaw.
I've heard that people use hedge apples to keep spiders away. Farmers around here use the wood to mark field borders..........hedge posts is what they are called.

if you were my neighbor, i'd ask to borrow it
i got a leaf blower but that was a complete waste of money; i went back to the rake-and-tarp method.

they used to plant them close enough together to form a 'living fence' that grew so thick it would keep livestock in place - they may still do that in some parts of the country..
I hate those leaf blower things. They make horrid noises, and the gas ones pollute the air. I'm all for raking. I can rake my leaves just as quickly as my neighbor piles his up with a blower. When I rake, unless a neighbor is leaf-blowing at the same time and ruining my tranquility, I am in heaven. The smell of the fallen leaves, the fresh air, the cool breeze, the sunshine. It's all good. And I get some great exercise as well.
Here's a foliage picture I took a few weeks ago, about 2 miles from my house. The grey area near the foreground is dried corn, awaiting harvest.

Hi, gang. Sorry I haven't been around. Life gets in the way sometimes, ya know?
Anyway...On my walk this morning, I could hear the owl for quite a while. Finally, I saw him when he left his perch. ALso saw a baby gator on the side of the lake this morning. Cute li'l guy.

That's a beautiful autumn scene
I agree with you on the leaf raking, to a point. It's calm and relaxing unless you have a bazillion leaves to get rid of, and a dearth of time to do it in. I have 4 acres- 3.5 of which is heavily wooded that I don't need to worry about the leaves in any case- but the remainder also has many huge oak trees that I love.
My biggest problem with leaf blowers, and yeah, mine is one of those noisy gas models, is that they just don't work in a situation where you have thousands of cubic feet-worth of leaves to move. You blow them into a pile- then what? You could use the blower to keep tormenting them across the lawn to the destination of choice, but what's the point of that?
Might as well rake a pile onto a tarp, drag the tarp where they need to go, and repeat. And repeat..and repeat.
