They can startle you awake if you are trying to sleep in and they decide to claim your porch as their territory. One early morning i was peacefully slumbering and suddenly heard rapid tapping right over my head on the outside of the house. I thought it was a burglar. I headed for the back door and was about to call 911. Then I saw the dang Gila woodpecker go looping off. They fly this really weird pattern, swooping up and down and then banking sideways. Once I got my heart to stop racing I could appreciate how cool they look in flight!
Mother Nature gave us a very picturesue morning. The snow on the branches and ground looks amazing, and the air is so fresh. Now if we just had some sun. I did see some deer off in the distance in a field while I was driving into the city.
