There is an event that may only occur once in our lives. It is the Asian Hooded Crane that has settled into Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Tennessee. I saw this bird last Friday. It was among thousands of sandhill cranes. I also saw bald eagles, phobe, 2 immature a 1 adult whooping crane(which is so incredible because they're near extinction) bluebirds, hooded mergansers, golden-eyed duck. Please get to the crane festival in Birchwood Tn if you can Jan 12th

Yesterday I saw a flock of seven cranes of some kind; they were flying in formation just high enough that I couldn't get details, though I'm quite sure they were white or grey. It was a beautiful sight!
I live in Northern California in the Mayacama mountains north of Santa Rosa and a little east, to get an idea of the area.
Today when I was driving back from the Napa Valley, in a reservoir I saw all manner of ducks & waterfowl, including a snowy egret and a type of heron, but probably not a Great Blue; I think it was too small for that.
Anyway, seeing these lovely creatures it was hard to keep the car on the road and I didn't have time to stop, sadly.
This is a beautiful winter, but there is a real shortfall of the usual winter activity. This warm weather has completely screwed everything up. I did see some chickadees though.
Don't know where she is hanging out today but she loves to bird watch too. I just hope these birds are smarter than my hummingbirds were last summer.
If your winter is as mellow as ours is (and I think I read you are also having a warmer winter than usual??), she probably has lots of fair weather"cat stuff" to do.
Hi nature folks! Been away for a bit, so will enjoy looking over your latest observations....
Kinda quiet here....chickadees, cardinals, titmice at the feeder and just one male goldfinch. The suet is popular now that it is cooler here. The birding trips around here will start up again next week, so maybe I will have something interesting to report... quiet at the beaches too, some sanderlings, pelicans, cormorants, gannetts and sea ducks too far away to id.
I never tire of seeing the brown pelicans, egrets and hawks here, but the other day I saw a big bird with a long neck, it was dark in color, my friend said it was a blue heron. I'm not sure if it was, but I was happy to see something different. We have so many different species of birds here, it's amazing.
