Ah, Thompson...now there's a place I've been to several times over the years and liked a lot; don't think I'd want to be there this time of year, though.

Had to drive over the mountain to see the chiropractor, and upon return I saw that the landscape/tree guys had been pruning. To my way of thinking, the pruning was excessive, i.e., there will be much less shade next summer, so I'm not happy about that. And of course it follows there will be fewer walnuts in the fall. . .
The worst thing though, was the gouging out of "my" lovely mushroom! As far as I can understand there was just no reason for doing this. It had been there for at least two months and at some point would die off, but why destroy it??? Does anyone here have knowledge/ideas about this?

I hope they had a really good reason and didn't kill it out of sheer laziness or ignorance. Maybe one of our "experts" can tell you?? Sorry, Macrina.

I lived there for a few years too...not much colder than a southern Manitoba winter and more northern lights. Long days in the summer (people golf until 11:00 some nights), and the lakes are pristine and beautiful in the summer.
So nice to see someone on here, who knows these parts of the GWN.
Saw a couple of coyotes today, not far off in some farm field but real up close. Fact is if I'd been driving any faster down the rural road that's the shortcut to our shop I probably would have run them both over. But the roads are bare now, the truck has damned good brakes, I'm still pretty quick at slamming them on when I have to and I guess these coyotes still had some luck left over in their cups as they ran out onto the road from behind the snow fence.
I stayed there for a minute or two, not moving the Ford, and watched the canine pair. They were looking kind of rough, their coats were ragged and they both looked like they needed to put on a few pounds or more. It hasn't been an easy winter around here this year; closer in to the city which lies on the coast it has actually been pretty mild, but not at this end of the valley some 50 miles inland. These two weren't in a hurry to run off but they kept moving and eyed me suspiciously. No doubt they half expected me to pull out a rifle and open fire on them.
They worked their way across the snow covered meadow and went directly for the chicken farm some quarter mile away. Now obviously their scheme was to somehow get into the pens and score a meal for themselves at Farmer Brown's (and the chicken's) expense. It's kind of sad in a way that they've been driven to taking chances that would definitely carry a death penalty if their plans end in the worst possible kind of failure, but I suppose they have to do what they have to do just to survive.

Good night all.

Yeah, we are very much moving into their country, Ron. Alot of folks in this part of the world have gone into guardian dogs like Great Pyrenees (I used to have one), and they do a very good job of keeping predators away.

Well, that was uncalled for. I guess the word for that is mycocide.
