Oh, D Kitty, this is the PNW -- the slug is our state mascot!
I would have to cover my entire yard with coffee grounds -- and frankly we probably generate enough grounds. (It is Seattle metro, after all!)
Thanks for thinking of me, but I just let the fat sucker get his drink and move on.
As an aside, when we lived in the U-District (where we were much closer to the street, I used to fling them out into the street as I came across them -- with my weeding tool, of course. That stopped the day a car drove over one just after I'd flung it. I felt terrible! Now, I just let them ooze on their merry way and pray for ducks to come visit. (They never do.)
My bigger problem right now is finding someone to come remove the bees that are settling into an opening above our back door. DH bought the poison, but when I threw a fit he gave me a small window of time to get someone to come take them away. I sent out an email to three different bee people, and am now crossing my fingers.
I know coffee is very popular in Seattle but had no idea about slugs! I've never seen many slugs but I'm not fond of squishing them either. Last time I saw one in Dallas I gave it a ride to the far end of the yard.
I wouldn't poison the bees either. Hope you hear from the bee people with suggestions or maybe there's someone near you who will come out.
For all the slugs in your yard, I'm thinking pet duck!

If it were not for Bigun the wonder dog -- aka: "demon black cur" to the yard's creatures, I would have ducks AND chickens. I just cannot picture him cohabiting after watching him fending off crows, squirrels -- he even chases the bees!

Just clicked over to your profile to do some more Bigun viewing. I'm a Bigun fan! Nice pic of you!
Bigun can easily get the best of ducks and chickens but how about a goose? That would give Bigun a lot of exercise being chased by a goose!

Because of Dallas Kitty's comment I went to look at the album. Enjoyed it. Good captions. Now I feel like I know Bigun.
After the bees are dealt with . . . I've heard steel wool keeps out rodents. I suppose it might keep out bees.

Lol! He's everybody's favorite dog. Everywhere we go: "Is that a puppy?!" (Usually in a high-pitched, cooing tone.) Sometimes I just say, "No, he's three." Others, I just smile. He will always be a puppy, I think.
Euuuu... rodents are beyond my limits of humane consideration. We had a rat in the yard (before Bigun), and I wasn't a bit sympathetic about trapping and disposing of it. Mammals should know better!
As for the bees, still no responses from the folks I emailed, but I am still hopeful. Personally, I think if DH had made sure the house was sealed from invasions (instead of fishing, shooting, fishing, working ham radio contests, fishing, and chasing after foreclosures -- when he's not fishing) we would not be in this situation.
I am just here to "screw my courage to the sticking post" and say hi yall...
Sun Queen, why on earth do you need courage to come visit your friends here? I love seeing you out and about.
How's the natural world in your sphere of existence?
Bigun and I just returned from our morning walk. He's confined to walks away from the wooded areas because the creatures (mostly cotton tails) are out leaving tantalizing scents and he loses all sense when he gets on the trail. (Twice now he's gotten himself stuck in a blackberry patch and has had to "muscle" his way out -- leaving me to find and remove stickers from those hard to get to places for him. )
Just found an email from Marvin the bee guy that my bees are german yellow jackets, and DH is right. Sounds like their about to be dead german yellow jackets.
This is pretty funny. Not your usual nature documentary.
Warning: Some might be offended by the language.
Wow! Nothing is safe from the badger! Even the cobra knew it was in trouble.
