My Nature Observation for the day: I walked out with my dog to get my newspaper this morning (he brings it in, I just go to keep him from running into the next yard) and stepped on a big ole nasty slug with my bare foot! Yuck!!
Driving up the mountain today to go to Church, I saw the following: two deer, probably yearlings from their size, a fawn, two HUGE Tom turkeys , a jack rabbit and (I think) a grey fox. The fox crossed the road a little ahead of me so I only caught a glimpse, but am fairly certain it was a fox, possibly a juvenile.
Of course I rarely get any pictures of these creatures because I'm on a one lane gravel or dirt road with usually no place to turn out and because of having to watch for on-coming traffic. As I said, in places it's a one lane road for both directions.
Oh, and the bodies of the turkeys were each about the size of a bushel basket, maybe larger. They had just crossed the road, but just barely. Two seconds earlier, and I'd have hit them I think. It was one of those down a hill ~ around a corner situation.
I was quite amazed by this...we have one Grackle(many more ) and when it comes to our bird bath I have seen the Grackle having it's food in the beak. Next I saw it washing it's food nicely and after wards it flies off on our fence to finish it's meal. Has anyone else noticed this behavior with our local birds?
Cute! Looks like the tabbies like the lounge position!

I'm sorry about the crappy prolonged winter, Northeast! Hopefully that was definitely the last of it.

Finicky bird! I've seen squirrels wash their food but have never observed a bird doing that. I don't see much bird activity around my house. They are apparently not interested in palm trees or any of the shrubs and bushes. I do want to add some flowering plants that attract butterflies!

Ugh, puginabug! I would have hurried to clean my foot as fast as I could without smearing the slug!
