Took the pic below this past August. The hummers have been gone since early October. I look forward to their return next Spring.

Sitting here looking out my window, just saw a bald eagle swoop down and grab a salmon from the river then back up on its perch. That was very cool!

I was sitting in a tree stand yesterday overlooking a growth of white oak when a small spike whitetailed deer came up over the ridge and approached my stand. The wind was coming directly at me in the same direction he was walking. He proceeded to come up to within 10 yards and began nibbling on some fungi that had grown from an old dead tree. He proceeded to walk to my right and bed down just 15 yards away then continued to nibble on a fern that was directly in front of him all the while, unaware of my presence. A few minutes passes and the wind shifted and he apparently caught my scent. He jumped to his feet with his nose in the air and continued to run out of sight. Their sense of smell is nothing short of amazing. You can fool their eyes and ears by being still, but their nose will seek you out. I wish I'd taken my camera and snapped a few pics of him.

Lots of crunchy autumn leaves underfoot, even though we're warmer than usual for the time of year.

Deer like pumpkins. We notice that deer had been nibbling on the decorative pumpkins we had on our front porch. After Thanksgiving we threw them in the woods for a treat and we soon noticed several deer having a great time with them. This morning there are pieces of pumpkin spread over a considerable area in our woods. I'm going to tell our neighbors to bring their pumpkins down to our woods instead of putting them in the trash. Now, I have been fighting these darn deer for 5 years and normally wouldn't even consider feeding them. But we finally have our 7 ft deer fence up so I feel pretty safe.

some of us here in N.C. still have hummers at our feeders. Interesting to know some overwinter here.

On my walk this afternoon a leaf on the path in front of me suddenly came to life and flew away. Okay, it was a bird.

On the way to town saw a flock of wild turkeys down by the river and thought, how pretty! Then on the way home, just as rain was turning to sleet, the flock decided to cross the road right in front of me. (Turkeys just walk unless really motivated to fly.)

Turkeys and I are all just fine, accident avoided. Although I almost bagged one a few days too late for Thanksgiving!

I wonder what turkeys do for winter; haven't thought about that before. Something else to look up.
