After days of no sightings outside of the usual backyard visitors (chickadees, robins, crows, and dark-eyed juncos) we went on a nature walk yesterday and saw some birds we haven't seen in awhile:
We're taking the back roads to Puyallup today, and I'll have my camera ready to go! Our jays and ducks haven't returned yet. I think I have our rat problem under control, so I'll be putting bird seed out again.

Our rats went away when Bigun arrived on the scene, and now that Sparky joined us, I don't think there's a chance of them returning!

Are Bigun and Sparky your cats? My desert dog has finally gotten the hang of being a farm dog. She ignores the chickens, and spends hours digging up rat and mole holes. Hopefully she can keep them gone, otherwise it's time for a big ol' barn cat.

Lord no! Bigun is a beagle-cocker spaniel, and Sparky is a terrier mix:
I saw about a dozen birds in a field alongside the road. Thought they might be geese from a distance, but looked like black vultures gathered around a feast up close.

That's a common sight here in WV. There seems to be more road killed deer this fall than in recent years. My guess is the shortage of acorns in the woods and the deer are coming out to eat grass along the highways. WV leads the nation in deer collisions.

Maybe so. This was in an area where nature and development mix. Lots of fields and woods, but residences and businesses, too. More than once I have seen a deer crossing a road in one of our suburbs. If it wasn't for the woods, I don't think they would have enough cover to be there.
It is so windy and cold here today the only nature I've seen are 2 black squirrels wearing parkas...
