Once again,,, I’m seeing a couple of woodpeckers during this winter season come into my backyard and attack the new trees that I’ve had planted. It wouldn’t bother me if the trees were mature and larger however they are still young and growing. Well,,, these woodpeckers or redheaded sapsuckers are not welcomed here. I bought more of these little teddybears are the 99cent store and placed them in the tree. The birds think they’re cats I guess. I also got one of my old long sleeved shirts, a pair of jeans and a strong coat hanger fixed up with a baseball cap and hung it on a branch. Now they (the sapsuckers) think there’s a man outside near the tree so they stay away. I don’t want all those holes in the tree with sap running out of them……

However the birds are beautiful with their coloring of feathers. I think this was the same pair that visited around this time last year.

Never heard of teddy bears as bird deterrents. Does that work?

Out walking the dogs yesterday along a dry creek bed (elevation 7,000 feet). Came on some mountain lion tracks and the dogs basically froze both looking up towards a ridge to the right of us. I didn't see anything but decided it would be best to back up and slowly make our way back home.

Yes,, apparently to them the teddy bears look like cats in the trees. And most birds don't like cats around..... However I find that I need to move the bears around onto other branches every now and then just to make the birds feel that they're alive. The best thing is that I don't have to provide or clean out a litter box......... LOL

Freezing frost happens often here when it is foggy and the temperature is below freezing everything gets covered with ice crystal. Quite pretty, but cold

Observed a neighborhood cat sitting on top of a fence post, surveying his kingdom.

Yesterday it thawed. I have a small bird bath that sits on the ground under a lilac by my window where I use the computer. Every day the birds come in the late afternoon for a meal, then to the lilac to preen and to bathe and drink.

The usual cluster of sparrows made their appearance around four and in the midst of them was the most alpha female I've ever seen. Usually they're all like "the more the merrier" but this feisty little gal wanted the whole bath to herself and it was plain that even some of the older males had had enough experience with her that they knew to keep their distance.

The others kept trying to slip into the water when her back was turned but all it took from her was a turn of the head and they flinched away pretty quickly. I've never noticed such a dominant female before. Must be the widowed aunt visiting for the holidays!

Will have to keep an eye out for her to see if we have a repeat performance again today.

Hawk got another Dove in the backyard. Feathers everywhere. This particular Coopers is really sneaky. He'll fly into the pine on the opposite side then jump down branches, sit and wait.
