Armadillos are so funny..only once have I seen one but it was running and yes, it was fast!
Maybe it is the crest on the Blue Jay that resembles a prehistoric bird....? Like a pileated woodpecker.
We have coons here big time. But for some odd reason, my peaceful, laid-back, kindly old german shepherd HATES coons. She will kill them every chance she gets.
Maybe because the german shepherd LOVES cat food for dessert. We have an armadillo that comes and goes too. He digs up the lawn really bad. The shepherd just lets the armadillo dig. I play armadillo hockey and use a stick to run the critter off. Did you know they can run pretty fast? And they also will put their head in the ground and they think I can't see them.
For some reason, blue jays remind me of dinosaurs.
We have a juvenile owl that flies in circles when I sit outside at night. It is a huge owl too.[/quote]
I have never seen them fight but one of my cats got a smack across the face when she got too close to one.

Our camp was visited by a young raccoon a couple of evenings. My dog was asleep in the tent, or he would have scared it off. It was small, so it really was pretty cute. We did not encourage it!
Every night we heard coyotes. The first night was two packs on either side of the park; one small, about two or three, the other larger, about five or six. The second night it was one larger pack, about eight coyotes, I'd say. The last night, our friends in the next site said they heard one near their tent, and it seemed to be responding to the whimpering of a small child in another campsite. My guess is that it was a concerned female that had, at some point, had pups, so the similarity of the sounds must have worried her and she came to help what she thought might be a pup in distress. She eventually went away without incident.
I heard a female Barred Owl briefly every night. Man! Are they loud!!! They really are farther away than you think they are.
Saw a couple of walking sticks. They're really cool.
And...I saw my first Pileated Woodpecker! That's one more bird for the Lifelist!
Other than that, just the usual orb-weaving spiders, gnats, hornets, and poison ivy!
My request for a nature forum was turned down, was told to post in science....but no one posts bird, animal, rock, tree, etc posts there!
Today I saw a Yellow-billed cuckoo...brown w/long tail that has tear-shaped white spots...very secretive bird, I was happy to see one.
And: pair of Downy woodpeckers and 2 juvenile Red-bellied woodpeckers cavorting in the trees. Dragonflies galore.......lots of yellow-orange-red blooming lantana in my area now.
What have you observed recently about our natural world?

I would love to talk about birds. I moved to Tn recently from NJ and I have all new backyard birds to see.

It was interesting because I thought they were all cats, and I had to slow down to avoid hitting one, and I just saw the cats and raccoons sitting there. At first I thought I was seeing things but I wasn't. This is the first year I have seen so many raccoons.
Location: Finally made it to Florida and lovin' every minute!

Raccoons can be mean and can be trouble, too. But I still think they're cute.
This must be armadillo day. DH has started walking with me in the mornings and my little 'dillo was there to greet us. He was so cute! He hopped away like he was part bunny!

We were never into birds until we moved to where we are now. So many different kinds we finally bought a book and have been identifying and keeping track.
