I have heard some call it the monkey tail tree because the branches are shaped like a monkey's tail, but anyone know the official name of this tree?

That's exactly what it is, a monkey tail tree. It's the only thing I ever heard it called, but I think it's also known as the Chilean pine tree because it's the national tree of Chile. It's a very ancient species of evergreen, found only in a small region of South America.

Thanks for replies. I just assumed it had some other name but now I know. I only see them here in the Pacific Northwest.

I did not have the faintest Idea what it is. But want you to know I appreciated the picture. I'm always pleased to see new things.

I wouldn't mind having one, but I really doubt it would grow in North Dakota. You are probably in the only region in the US where it can thrive.

After posting. I did some more searching. It does have some alternative names after all.

Araucaria araucana (commonly called the monkey puzzle tree, monkey tail tree, Chilean pine, or pehuén) is an evergreen tree growing to 40 m (130 ft) tall with a 2-m (7-ft) trunk diameter. The tree is native to central and southern Chile and western Argentina.[1] Araucaria araucana is the hardiest species in the conifer genus Araucaria. Because of the great age of this species, it is sometimes described as a living fossil. Its conservation status was changed to Endangered by the IUCN in 2013 due to its declining abundance.[2]
