Over 700 people dead now with the Nepal earthquake. Yikes.

And apparently caused an Avalanche.

Interestingly watching the news yesterday they claimed that seismologists expect a "big one" to hit the region every century or so... but, supposedly, this earthquake actually doesn't represent the "big one" that they are anticipating. This 7.8/7.9 pretty much wipes out the country and probably has resulted in 10s of thousands of deaths. Imagine what the "big one" will do... ://////

Wiped out the country? 10s of thousands of deaths? . . Bit much.

The "Big One" would obviously be much more devastating but still confined to a region near Epicenter.

Death toll under 4000 including Everest and all related.

I wonder how much can be rebuilt. Structures are probably damaged beyond repair. Many are homeless. Many unaccounted for under the rubble but I don't think it surpasses 5,000.. Maybe.

Very grim situation in Nepal. I have no pictures but they can be found on line easily enough. A site I found useful is here:
Earthquake-Report.com
This summarizes all of the recent earthquakes from M2 infants to things passing M9. According to the article on the Nepal Quake the last "official" count was 4365 dead and over 7000 injured. The article goes on to say that about 5% percent of the affected areas have been reached by rescuers so it is almost certain the toll will go higher.

Yeah, I'd say wiped out, and it's now well over 5,000. We're still only seeing limited coverage and aid groups have not really reached rural areas. 10,000 seems to be a significant understatement, probably to protect the country's image as it relies on tourism to a considerable degree.
