Merlins and kestrels are actually falcons, not accipiters. The accipiters of North America are the Goshawk, the Cooper's hawk, and the Sharp-shinned hawk. The most common North American falcons are the Gyrfalcon, the Peregrine falcon, the Prairie falcon, the Merlin, and the American Kestrel.

common names used locally for same and or different species of cats. puma, tigre, panther, cougar, catamount used locally for same cat, some are shared for jaguar. Leopard is African species

All have camo or color phases to match their environment and behavior through evolutionary development for greatest success.

You don't want to meet any of these cats face to face. All are cunning and have earned mythical status in many cultures.

For insight into Indian tigers read 'maneaters of kumaon by col jim Corbett.

'Tsavo lions'....amazing story upon which the movie was based

Puma and cougar are the same animal. These cats are called by different names in different parts of the country. We call them mountain lions out West. In FL they call them panthers. Puma is a more southwest name. Cougar is used all over. Jaguars and leopards are distinct feline species. Also the Tsavo region African male lions do not have manes like the ones on Serengeti. They are a different subspecies.

This is just general info and hardly all inclusive However as one poster suggested a little reading wouldn't hurt.
